Work Location: Perth, Hazelmere, Redcliffe, WA
Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.
Roster: Monday to Friday
Reporting to the Lead Process Safety and Risk Engineer, the Senior System Safety Engineer will be responsible for providing Systems Safety support and guidance to engineering teams on complex projects across the Heavy Industry sector (e.g., rail, mine haul trucks, heavy duty charging equipment), as well as proactively manage interfaces with key stakeholders, including the Engineering teams, Project Management, Operations, and Health & Safety across the entire lifecycle, and will pro-actively mitigate issues and risks to deliver Safety Cases and ensure safe operation of the facility during deployment.
The role requires the application of safety, functional safety and RAM engineering analysis techniques and standards to a variety of projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Developing effective strategies to ensure developed products, systems and applications are safe, maintainable, and reliable.
  • Identifying hazards, hazard analysis and management, and assessing safety risk.
  • Developing, owning, maintaining, and implementing the Safety Plans and Safety Cases.
  • Performing Safety and RAM requirements capture, analysis, modelling, and traceability activities to gain certification authority approval.
  • Applying System Safety assessment techniques such as FTA, FMEA, CCA, HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, SHA, IHA, etc. in the design of products.
  • Engaging and influencing the Product Design and Engineering activities to ensure that the hierarchy of controls and Safety in Design practices are implemented in products.
  • Carrying out additional tasks as may be required from time to time by the Lead Process Safety and Risk Engineer.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree or equivalent in Engineering/Electrical/Electronic/Computer Science
  • Previous experience in the working in a system or functional safety role and RAM studies within rail, heavy industry (e.g. mining), automotive, or aerospace engineering.
  • Understanding and application experience of safety management and Safety Engineering processes such as safety planning, hazard analysis, safety requirements capture and safety case development.
  • Experience or knowledge of producing the following: Hazard Identification, System Hazard Log Management, System Hazard Analysis Reports, Application Safety Cases, Safety Analysis Reports, FME(C)As etc.
  • Understanding and application experience of verification and validation techniques is highly desirable.
  • Experience with CENELEC 50126/50128/50129 and IEC 61508 standards or other industry equivalents is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Australian and applicable international codes and standards as well as the applicable statutory requirements.
  • Experience or knowledge of cybersecurity standards is highly desirable.
  • Experience in risk assessment and control effectiveness activities:
  • Bowtie/HAZID/dFMEA/HAZOP/SIL/FTA/SHA/IHA, preferably in rail or automotive, with specific battery-electric experience valued.
