This is an exciting opportunity to join a small multi-disciplinary team responsible for conducting technical assessments, undertaking compliance activities, and providing advice in relation to developments and policies impacting on koala habitat areas in south-east Queensland.
We are seeking a motivated person with experience in a regulatory service delivery environment. You can analyse impacts of development on the Environment and consolidate your findings into technical advice. You can conduct desktop and fieldbased compliance investigations of potential illegal clearing events. You can communicate with influence, able to professionally engage with our key stakeholders in state and local government, the development industry, conservation organisations and the community.

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation is seeking to appoint an experienced and passionate individual to join a small multi-disciplinary team responsible for conducting technical assessments and compliance investigations under the relevant provisions of the Planning Act 2016 and Nature Conservation Act 1992. The team conducts reactive and proactive compliance activities involving illegal clearing of koala habitat area as well as assessing development applications against the State Development Assessment Provisions of State Code 25. The role will be required to liaise with state and local government agencies, the development industry, conservation organisations and the community. You will also provide advice on matters impacting on the conservation of koalas, manage enquiries and investigate allegations of illegal clearing in koala habitat area and participate in site meetings and inspections across SEQ.
Travel away from your normal centre of operations will be required from time to time.
This is likely to include overnight stays.
As the Senior Wildlife Officer, AO5 you will:

  • Undertake assessment and analysis activities related to proposed developments under relevant state planning legislation and codes within statutory timeframes.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders including other government departments, industry groups, commercial operators, research organisations and traditional owners.
  • Interpret legislation, regulations and other guidelines and provide information, advice, and education to key stakeholders.
  • Plan and manage compliance and enforcement operations of illegal clearing and development approval conditions.
  • Contribute to the planning, development, implementation and reporting of annual work programs and project plans.
  • Contribute to the preparation of corporate and strategic plans and provide input into the review of legislation, regulations, policies and operational frameworks.
  • Prepare complex correspondence including ministerial documents and briefings.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests and contributes to better outcomes for First Nations people.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and policies pertaining to natural resource and environmental management.
  • Actively work as an effective team member and as a member of the broader agency and can establish and maintain productive relationships with team members, managers and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and lead discrete, preventative, and targeted compliance activities including conducting site inspections, gathering evidence and making recommendations regarding enforcement actions.
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and tailor communication style to suit the audience in order to provide accurate information and policy advice.
  • Analyse issues and solve problems in the context of conservation and wildlife management and can manage and resolve conflicts with internal and external stakeholders.
