Wildlife Officers within the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation work to protect, conserve and manage the sustainable use of Queensland's native wildlife.
The role advertised is part of the Northern Wildlife Operations team. This team operates in Innisfail, Far North Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat-with particular focus on:
- regulation of the Nature Conservation Act to deliver protected wildlife compliance and enforcement
- providing safe interaction between people and wildlife
- working with the community to build positive interactions between community and wildlife
- applied research to assist in the development of innovative wildlife management strategies
The Branch plays a vital role in delivering effective conservation and regulatory outcomes for Queensland's native species and ecosystems and their safe interaction with the community generally.
As the Wildlife Officer you will:
- Plan and undertake preventative and targeted compliance activities relevant to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 including conducting field inspections, undertaking audits, the preparation of reports, issuing of infringement notices and assisting with prosecutions as required.
- Undertake practical tasks related to wildlife management such as safe capture and restraint of protected wildlife including crocodiles, attending marine wildlife stranding's, installation of informative signage and maintenance of equipment as required by the Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations Branch.
- Advise, liaise, consult and negotiate with all levels of Government agencies, industry and community groups on wildlife management issues and implementation of policy.
- Perform administrative tasks including purchasing of goods, auditing and stocktake of equipment and maintaining official records.
- Understand workplace health and safety legislation and associated departmental policies and procedures; provide leadership and facilitate continuous improvement in these areas.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
Travel away from your normal centre of operations will be required from time to time. This is likely to include overnight stays. Wildlife Officers participate in (after-hours) incident response and work on a roster basis which can include regular weekend work. In successfully undertaking this role, you will also be required to regularly crew small vessels and work in field-based situations.
This position requires an applicant who:
- Has analytical, research and problem solving skills, including an ability to interpret information to provide sound advice.
- Has sound knowledge of nature conservation legislation, principles and practices and specialist skills in identification, handling and care of native wildlife and understands the principles behind compliance and enforcement legislation and other regulatory frameworks that apply to Wildlife Officers.
- Demonstrates ability to supervise a work group, work effectively in a team and implement systems to promote performance management, ethical behaviour and decision making and professional development.
- Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of innovation, respect and inclusion.
