Job description

  • Help make Victoria a fairer place to live.
  • No prior experience needed. Fully paid pre-service training provided.
  • Monday to Friday roster, extended weekends.
Like working with people? Enjoy challenges? You could be a great Sheriff's Officer.
Taking action to build a fairer community
As a Sheriff's Officer, you will enforce warrants and orders issued by the courts. It's an important job that makes members of the public accountable for unpaid fines and other offences.
You will work on the road and in the community. On any given day, you could be working to resolve issues with:
  • people with years of unpaid traffic fines
  • homeowners far behind on mortgage payments
  • businesses who haven't honoured a court-ordered payment
  • someone who has failed to appear in court as required.
You will have autonomy to manage your own time and the tasks you must complete.
You daily tasks could include:
  • demanding and collecting payments
  • applying wheel-clamps to vehicles
  • seizing and removing property for the purpose of sale
  • arresting a person named in a warrant.
What makes a great Sheriff's Officer?
There are not many jobs quite like ours. So, rather than demanding specific previous experience, we look for people who have developed the skills that we need on the job.
We want people who can be:
Respectfully assertive – You're not afraid to have difficult conversations with people and enforce a warrant.
Empathetic – You're a good listener and can build a rapport with people from all backgrounds.
Resilient – You can recover quickly from tense interactions. You won't take verbal abuse from members of the public personally.
‘I love my job. I love the team that I work with. I don't think I've ever worked for a place where you build bonds with people as quickly as I have here.'
Alicia, Sheriff's Officer
Why you'll love the job
Your work will be tough at times. But you will know it's important for Victoria.
You will also likely enjoy the role's many benefits, including:
✔ Access to learning and development courses, secondments and other opportunities within the Victorian Public Service.
✔ A Monday-to-Friday roster, with no regular weekend work (overtime is sometimes available). There are also shifts starting in the morning and the afternoon.
✔ A four-day week, every fortnight. Use your extended weekends to relax, catch up with friends and family, or take off on trips around Victoria.
✔ Free, confidential counselling for any form of emotional stress.
