How You’ll Make a Difference

KWHB is currently looking for a full-time Social and Emotional Wellbeing Counsellorto join their team in Katherine, NT. 

The Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Counsellor will play a pivotal role in providing trauma-informed care and support to individuals and communities affected by catastrophic flooding in the Katherine West Region during 2023.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Implementing trauma-informed care principles in all interactions with clients, ensuring a safe and supportive environment that promotes healing and resilience.
  • Crisis Intervention: Providing crisis intervention and Emotional support to clients experiencing acute distress or crisis situations related to the flood impacts.
  • Psychoeducation: Educating clients and their families about trauma, its effects, and coping strategies, empowering them to take an active role in their recovery.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with local community organisations, agencies, and partners to ensure a coordinated response and access to essential services for clients.
  • Documentation: Maintaining accurate and confidential client records, using Communicare and other information management systems.

Please note: This role will involve regular travel, typically spending at least half of your time out in surrounding remote communities, staying overnight and travelling via 4WD, dirt roads and light aircraft as required.

What You’ll Bring to the Team

To be considered for this position, you’ll need a tertiary degree (or equivalent) along with the appropriate professional registration. A combination of skills and experience may also be considered.

As our ideal candidate, you will join with qualifications in mental health, counselling, or another related discipline.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values and a commitment to the advancement of Aboriginal communities. Prior experience working directly with Aboriginal people in remote communities would be considered an asset.

Additional requirements include:

  • Current driver’s licence
  • Current NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), or ability to obtain
  • Current Criminal History Check, or ability to obtain
  • Current COVID-19 immunisation certificate (3 doses required)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to travel to remote areas for periods by road and light aircraft when required
