The Soil & Landscape Science Group and the Mechatronics and Biorobotics Research Laboratory in the Faculty of Science & Engineering at Curtin University are seeking a Software Engineer to join the team.
The project and your new role
The project is funded by the Australian Government National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge, which aims to lower the cost of soil carbon analysis so that farmers and land managers can afford to measure soil carbon and partake in the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) scheme to capture and store soil carbon, help offset our carbon emissions and at the same time improve soil and ecosystem heath.
You will work in a team with soil and data scientists, and mechatronic engineers to design and develop an automated hardware-software system for cost-effectively measuring soil organic carbon stocks.
Specific to your role as a Software Engineer, you will work with the team to:
- Develop a user-friendly piece of software that integrate system control, data quality control and a data analytics.
- Contribute to the development of APIs for the system control.
- Develop APIs for data quality control.
- Further develop existing backend APIs that run the data analytics pipeline.
- Integration of APIs and front-end, graphical user interface (GUI) development.
- Deploy the integrated software and data analytic APIs on AMONZON AWS.
You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role. This position is based at our Curtin Bentley campus, candidates are expected to either be currently located in Perth, WA, or express a willingness to relocate. Visa sponsorship and relocation may be considered.

Selection Criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering or similar.
- Demonstrated expertise in backend development with Python Django and RESTful APIs, and frontend development with React.js, Python Tkinter or PyQt.
- Experience in data science in R statistical software and Python with Numpy, Scikit-learn, and Pandas.
- Some experience with machine learning pipelines will be helpful.
- Experience in software deployment with cloud services, e.g. AWS.
- Familiar with version control with Git and GitHub.
- Ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions to complex software challenges.
- Strong problem-solving skills, especially in troubleshooting and optimizing software systems.
- Ability to work in a team, to follow instruction and to take initiative.
