The Role
Reporting to the Litigation Partner, this position provides litigation advice to clients primarily in the ACT courts and tribunals but also including the Federal Courts and NSW Courts in relation to business, property, planning, construction, valuation and revenue disputes.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and draft correspondence, court documents including pleadings and affidavits, mediation documents and submissions.
- Managing and meeting Court timetables
- Directed and supervised contact with clients
- Manage the financial and general expectations of clients
- Providing written and oral advice to clients
- Oral and written negotiations with self-represented and represented opponents
- Preparing Briefs to Counsel, including the drafting of observations
- Legal research
- Statutory Interpretation
- Liaise with partners, solicitors and clerks
- Represent and advise executors and administrators of estates.
- Administrative and management functions related to the practice of law.
- Court appearances including instructing Counsel
- Analyse documents
- Manage financial and non-financial budgets
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
- Admitted to practice in the ACT
- A sound understanding of commercial law, in particular, contract law
- A sound understanding of the legislative framework regarding bankruptcy and insolvency
- Ability to develop strategies, tactics and arguments
- Ability to interpret legislation, decisions, regulations, and ordinances.

- A sound knowledge of the legislative and case law requirements in the practice area.
- Ability to interpret and advise on laws, rulings and regulations.
- Ability to analyse the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
- Strong legal drafting skills in both formal documentation and in correspondence
- Higher level interpersonal skills both in personal attendances and in telephone discussions or interviews.
- Perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law.
- Capacity to review, develop and document precedents in relevant practice area.
- Commitment to ongoing professional training.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality assurance.
