Job description

The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the management of a large team of Phlebotomy staff at the Prince Charles Hospital. The Prince Charles Laboratory Group consists of the Prince Charles, Redcliffe, and Caboolture hospitals. It is anticipated that members of the TPCH Phlebotomy team will have a primary work location at the Prince Charles Hospital, however, movement between sites will be required and will be undertaken with appropriate consultation.

The successful candidate will deliver training and support in all aspects of Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection to staff within the TPCH Specimen Collection work units and actively support staff to achieve their professional and organisational goals.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Advanced level of technical skills in Phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and clinical specimens.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the procedures and processes of Specimen Collection or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and skills in this area.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to prioritise workload to meet the clinical need of patients and to ensure an efficient client-focused service.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, commitment to teamwork, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, nursing and medical staff and with other pathology staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams to positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement quality systems which meet NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage staff in line with quality human resource management practices with particular reference to Queensland Health Code of Conduct, employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional self-development.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
  • Mandatory Certificate III in Pathology Collection
  • Cert IV in Pathology Specimen Collection would be highly regarded.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements
  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
