The Centres for Deaf Education cater for children and students with moderate to profound bilateral hearing loss. The Centres are co-located within mainstream preschools and schools and have a bilingual-bicultural approach (Auslan and spoken/written English). Students enrolled in the Centres for Deaf Education have educational needs resulting from their hearing loss, may use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants and may have Auslan as their first language. A percentage of these students do not have full access to a first language at home. Many students experience disordered language associated with their hearing loss. A number of students present with increased learner complexity due to coexisting needs in the areas of cognition, behaviour and/or mental health.
This role requires the incumbent to participate in the design and implementation of a service model that supports the provision of integrated and targeted services to meet the needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children and students at the Centres for Deaf Education. The Speech Pathologist is a member of a multi-disciplinary team working alongside psychologists, centre co-ordinators and Teachers of the Deaf. The Speech Pathologist works closely with senior Speech Pathologists, speech pathology colleagues, preschool and school staff, and families to develop evidence-based language, speech and communication interventions that include proactive, targeted, and intensive strategies that are adapted for the learning context of the Centres for Deaf Education. The Speech Pathologist works with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children and students and their families to support the acquisition and development of a bi-modal communication system that may include a combination of signed, spoken and/or written communication. This position works under the professional support and direction of the Senior Speech Pathologist.
This is an ongoing position of 0.4 FTE commencing as soon as possible.
The successful applicant is required to gain a Department for Human Services (DHS) working with children check (WWCC) prior to being employed which is required to be renewed every five years before expiry. The incumbent will be required to undertake RRHAN-EC (Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect - Education Care) Facilitator Lead (Masterclass) extended course or the online (Fundamentals) course which will be required to be updated every three years.
