SalaryTownsville University Hospital is expanding the established North Queensland tertiary Maternal Fetal Medicine Service (MFM), increasing our expert clinical support and management, and saving families from expensive and disruptive travel to Brisbane.
The Townsville Maternal Fetal Medicine Service is one of the few regional MFM units in Australia and the only MFM Department outside south-east Queensland.
You are invited to experience this exciting opportunity as part of a significant expansion of fetal maternal medicine at North Queensland’s largest tertiary hospital. Women and families will be able to access world-class care, closer to home, with the support of multi-disciplinary team including CMFM, sonography, midwifery, health worker and allied health specialist staff.
The Northern Queensland Maternal Fetal Medicine Service is the only service outside south-east Queensland providing a comprehensive range of screening, diagnostic, and therapeutic services for women and families in public and private healthcare sectors.
The MFM team works closely with Neonatal Intensive Care specialists in a large and extremely well supported level 6 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit providing newborn medical, surgical and transport care for North Queensland.

The role
Responsibilities:
- The role of the Maternal Fetal Medicine subspecialist is to provide high quality clinical and non-clinical services to benefit the patients of the Townsville HHS. This includes research as well as teaching the health professionals of the future.
- Participate in the general Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call roster as per the service requirements.
- Actively provide support, training and supervision for the MFM fellow role.
- Support and provide ultrasound training to the Royal Australian and New-Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) trainees within the O&G department.
- Triage referrals according to the Queensland Health Specialist Outpatient Services Implementation Standard to ensure women requiring MFM services receive high quality specialist care within a safe timeframe. Referrals are streamlined and redirected to alternative specialist clinical services as required.
- Women are prioritised for care against professional standards and clinical criteria including Statewide clinical prioritisation criteria (CPC) and judgement.
- Manage leave as required to ensure continued MFM service delivery without need for locum support.
- Provide clinical support via telehealth or outreach clinics to other services within Northern Queensland as required.
- All employees with the Townsville HHS are required to take reasonable care for their own health and safety, including carrying out work in accordance with prescribed practices and procedures and in a manner that will not create health and safety hazards for either the employee or others in the workplace.
- Lead and manage the provision of medical services in accordance with the standard of the speciality, the ethics of the profession and in accordance with the Townsville HHS and Queensland Health (QH) policies, in a hospital, community and outreach setting.
- In addition to the key responsibilities listed below, the role of the Maternal Fetal Medicine subspecialist/fellow is to provide such services as may be reasonably directed by the MFM Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Director, Medical Director, Service Group Director, and Executive Director of Medical Services Group.
