Job description

KangaNews, Australia’s leading independent financial markets information service, is seeking a Staff Writer to join its team. This job would suit an ambitious, motivated individual who wishes to make a start on a career in journalism and is interested in and willing to learn about capital markets and sustainable finance.

Please include a cover letter with your application explaining why you would be suitable for this position.

About the company

KangaNews is an independent financial publishing and events company based in Sydney. We are the leading source of information on Australasian bonds and sustainable finance, for an audience that works in these fields.

About the role

KangaNews is looking for a full-time employee to join its editorial team in Sydney.

Reporting to KangaNews’s head of content, the primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to assist with the production of news, analysis and data content for web and print publication. As part of a small team, responsibilities will be broad as will exposure to the whole business.

KangaNews will provide on-the-job and informal classroom training to the successful candidate. As a small business with a wide range of functions, it is vital that candidates be motivated, self-reliant and flexible.

Face-to-face contact with market sources and in-person learning are vital parts of our journalism. As such, this is primarily an office-based position. Although home working is an increasing part of professional life and we are happy to accommodate home working on a task basis, the successful candidate should expect to be based in KangaNews’s Sydney office.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Producing news and data content for KangaNews's online and print publications.
  • Assisting the editorial team in copy generation, production and logistics including transcribing interviews and conducting additional reporting on news and feature content.
  • Managing online publishing of KangaNews’s content, including using the company’s longform content builder.

What KangaNews wants from successful candidates

The main qualities we are seeking are initiative and a flexible mindset. We want editorial staff with natural curiosity and desire to learn, and who can benefit from training. A sound work ethic is also critical.

KangaNews does not demand qualifications in finance or journalism, though economics or similar disciplines would be an advantage. We do expect candidates to be articulate and capable of working with complex ideas. Superficial reporting is not sufficient for us, and while we do not expect junior journalists to come to us with knowledge of the bond market they must be willing and able to acquire one – assisted by our training.

Candidates will be asked to explain why they feel they would be a good fit for financial journalism. Evidence of interest in writing and/or finance, and a working knowledge of Excel, would be another advantage – though, again, are not necessary.

What KangaNews offers

This is a full-time, permanent role that offers an ideal first step in a career in journalism, finance, policy or many other options. KangaNews’s content is trusted and valued by a high-end audience.

Although hard working, KangaNews has a relaxed office culture that is more focused on quality of output than process. The team works together closely and is professionally and personally supportive. The business has a human face and encourages open lines of internal communication.

KangaNews is keen to encourage professional development and has a track record of seeing reporters progress through the business and in their next career steps elsewhere. While the position advertised is an entry level role, a candidate with all the qualities we are seeking will find ample opportunity to progress within the business.

KangaNews prefers its journalists actively to develop contacts and relationships, which includes plenty of time out of the office at meetings and events. Although we are committed to in-house training and development, we find the most valuable experiences in this regard tend to take place 'in the field'.
