About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney is one of the largest and most comprehensive Medicine and Health faculties in Australia, encompassing diverse areas such as dentistry, clinical medicine, health sciences, medical sciences, nursing and midwifery, pharmacy, and public health, and continuously being ranked number one in Australia and among the top 20 globally across multiple academic fields. As part of our community of more than 2,500 academic and professional staff and close to 3,800 affiliate staff from across the healthcare sector, you will have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world.

We have an extensive research and education footprint. Over the past 5 years, we have generated more than $1.3 billion in research income and shared our research discoveries through 37,000 publications, attracting close to 700,000 citations globally. We deliver our accredited educational offering through 140 specialised courses, including one of the largest higher degrees by research programs in the country, to 13,000 students annually and facilitate over 18,000 placements at 3,000 sites across all NSW Local Health Districts and within our 30 teaching hospitals. We educate 30% of the NSW health workforce and have a global network of 100,000 alumni.

In the current rapidly changing and highly competitive environment, there are both new challenges and numerous emerging opportunities. We are now seeking 2 highly experienced and visionary Strategic Insights Advisors (Medicine and Health), one supporting our academic endeavours across Research and one across Education to further advance our aspiration to make and shape the future of healthcare and to maximise new opportunities. You will play a critical role in providing strategic guidance, leveraging data-driven and evidence-based insights, and fostering innovation to drive organisational change and continuous improvement. You will be supported by a team of Business Insights Analysts and work closely with the Head, Business Insights and Analysis and the Faculty Executive to enable the Faculty to significantly contribute to the delivery of the University's 2032 Priorities.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • partner with Faculty's key stakeholders and provide Strategic Insights, advice, and guidance to inform policy, planning and strategic and operational decision making
  • continuously evaluate and report on Faculty research/education performance against agreed internal objectives, key performance indicators, external benchmarks, and best practices, and provide advice and recommendations to drive organisational change and continuous improvement
  • develop market and competitive intelligence, by conducting comprehensive analyses of healthcare and higher education sector, Government policy and priorities changes, and latest developments and trends, to identify and capitalise on emerging opportunities, inform strategic positioning, and assess and mitigate potential risks
  • lead improvements in Faculty research/education performance intelligence delivery, engage with Faculty internal teams as well as build strong relationships with stakeholders and research/ education data custodians across the University to collaborate, leverage resources and capabilities, improve data quality and integrity, and maximise data utilisation and insights generation
  • develop tools and resources to improve Faculty staff access and ability to utilise and interpret research/education performance insights reports and tools, to improve data literacy and enable better-informed decision making across the faculty.

About you

  • extensive experience in delivery of impactful Strategic Insights to drive organisational change and maximise business opportunities
  • deep understanding of:
    • Research-focused role: academic medical research landscape and its key drivers and stakeholders, regulatory framework and ethical considerations, relevant organisational processes and methodologies, latest developments, and global/national trends.
    • Education-focus role: Australian tertiary education sector and its policy framework, market demand drivers and competitive intelligence (Medicine and Health), latest technological developments and trends changing the higher education landscape.
  • strategic mindset with a focus on business development, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • strong analytical and critical thinking skills, a passion for uncovering new and deeper insights through comprehensive analyses, and the ability to synthetise and translate complex data into succinct insights, compelling narratives, and actionable recommendations
  • demonstrated ability to lead, plan, manage and coordinate the delivery of complex analysis and policy advice in a rapidly changing and competitive environment.
  • demonstrated ability to deliver executive-level oral and written communications and strong business partnering and stakeholder management skills
  • demonstrated ability to operate with a high level of autonomy and responsibility and effectively manage multiple priorities.
