This is a nine (9) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024 with possible extension (12 months)

Mount Magnet District High School (DHS) is seeking a Secondary Generalist Teacher to join their high quality regional school.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Mount Magnet District High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $17,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school. 

About the role

The successful applicant will teach secondary students in a multi-age secondary engagement class, Years 7 to 10. Applicants will ideally have personal qualities that nurture student well-being and engage students in developing skills across learning areas. Ideally the successful applicant will be able to draw upon experience devising engaging programs and may be able to deliver some Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) programs.

Applicants should be well organised and creative with the ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff. A desire to engage with Aboriginal people as well as an understanding of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework are highly regarded.

Our school

We have around 90 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 from diverse cultural backgrounds and are guided by our ethos: We are Respectful, We are Responsible, We are Achievers.

The school and town are located in Badimia Country, with a number of students and staff members closely connected to and continuing language and culture.

The school has a Wajarri Language program and along with visual arts, this is important in both the school and community. The School is part of the Murchison Network of schools comprising of Meekatharra District High School, Yulga Jinna Remote Community School, Cue Primary School, Yalgoo Primary School and Pia Wadjarri Remote Community School.

The location and community

Mount Magnet is one of the Mid West region's original gold mining towns, and the longest surviving gold mining settlement in Western Australia. Surrounding the town are remnants of old gold mining operations, and to the northeast are significant Aboriginal sites being preserved jointly by the local community and the Western Australian Museum.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements.
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
