This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024.

John Tonkin College is seeking to appoint a dedicated, innovative and enthusiastic Secondary Generalist Teacher to join their team. Initially, the person we are seeking will ideally have a passion to teacher in the Humanities area. However, those with a passion for Maths and Science should also apply as this recruitment process may be utilised for other Secondary Generalist positions that become available.

The successful applicant should be willing to teach across a range of Learning Areas for students from Years 7 to 12. Ideally you will have public school experience and secondary qualifications, however a primary qualified person may be suitable.  The role would suit applicants who are highly organised and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Teachers who can create a learning environment that is differentiated, challenging, caring, and creative and that caters for the range of needs so all students may achieve and progress are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant should have the ability to work collaboratively to plan and implement effective teaching and learning plans. They will provide excellence in creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential. With effective interpersonal skills, suitable applicants will work closely with students, colleagues, and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for students.

JTC spans two campuses, Tindale (Year 7 to 9) and MET (Year 10 to 12), with a dedicated Marine Centre in Dawesville on the Peel Estuary.

JTC offers unique and diverse programs, including the only Education Department endorsed Surf Science Specialist Program in Western Australia. These programs provide students with interest-based learning opportunities while building a strong portfolio for further education and their chosen career pathway.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):

  • Professional knowledge;
  • Professional practice; and
  • Professional engagement.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
