Job description

Advertised Vacancy Number: IPS/TCH894605

This is a seven (7) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 with possible extension.

Belmont City College (CC) is seeking to appoint a dynamic and committed teacher in our Positive Engagement Program. The Positive Engagement Program supports at-risk youth in the Year 7 to 9 age group who experience challenges engaging in a mainstream secondary school environment. The program will be delivered off-site and is well supported by Belmont City College, the City of Belmont and a number of external agencies.

The Positive Engagement Program will deliver specialised activities and learning programs that build students’ academic skills, social skills and self-regulation using a strengths-based approach. An emphasis will be placed on individual education plans, personal learning projects, social and emotional education, life skills and embedded literacy and numeracy remediation, as required by each individual student.

The successful applicant will ideally have a growth mindset and a strong sense of social justice as well as being committed to supporting young people to overcome barriers to their education and personal development. They should possess exemplary teaching practices, communication skills, teamwork skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse groups of young people in educational settings. They should display the capacity to build positive relationships with students, their families and other stakeholders involved in supporting students.

Experience working in alternative education settings is desirable, as is knowledge and/or experience of trauma-informed practice, therapeutic crisis intervention in schools, functional behavioural assessment, classroom management strategies and the positive behaviour support framework. A capacity and willingness to participate in targeted professional development in areas such as these will be required.

The successful applicant will need to display the ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams. The Positive Engagement Program teacher will be collaboratively supported by the Belmont City College Student Services team, YMCA Base@Belmont youth workers and community agencies. The successful applicant should display the capacity to forge strong working relationships in diverse environments. Suitable applicants will ideally possess the ability to draw on a range of community resources and agencies to support student outcomes.

Belmont CC has modern facilities and is set in the heart of the City of Belmont which provides the backdrop for our many innovative programs. We pride ourselves in being able to give individualised care and attention to help each student reach their potential, developing their self-confidence, independence and the knowledge and skills necessary to enable them to take advantage of increasing opportunities beyond school.

Our focus is on providing a safe and caring learning environment that encourages students to become self-motivated, independent learners who display pride in themselves, their school, and their community. A strong pastoral care program supports the social and emotional needs of the students, whilst the diverse range of academic and life skills programs nurture academic excellence for all students.

Belmont CC offers programs ranging from our highly successful Department of Education Approved Specialist Contemporary Drama Program to our Music Excellence program and the selective A Plus Academic Excellence Program in partnership with the University of Western Australia, the Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success program for Aboriginal students aspiring to attend university and Clontarf Academy and Deadly Sista Girlz engagement programs.
