The Team
Major Works is the major brownfield construction team at Sydney Trains. Providing Engineering and Maintenance work across the Sydney Trains Network. There are over 1000 staff in the directorate which operate in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary project environment. The vision for Major Works Division is to become the deliverer of choice for rail infrastructure modernisation projects in Sydney Trains. To achieve this, it is focussed on delivering projects which are commercially competitive and meet the desired timeframes and quality and safety standards.
The opportunity
Right now, we have an opportunity for an experienced Team Manager (Signals) to join our Major Works team who are responsible for delivering maintenance and renewal of existing infrastructure assets across the Sydney Trains network and enabling and supporting Transport infrastructure investments in the rail network.
This is an exciting role that has around 45 direct reports with additional apprentices. You will have the opportunity to deliver on long term signalling projects, interfacing and collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders, with safety always at the forefront. There is also a possibility to earn over-time on the weekends.
Reporting to the Services Manager Signals, you will be responsible for:
Managing the routine maintenance aspects of the infrastructure fixed assets primarily within defined geographical boundaries in a safe, reliable and customer focused manner at a commercially comparable cost.
Maximising the utilisation of Team Leaders, Work Group Leaders and Infrastructure Workers and assets through the effective coordination of their activities to meet organisational objectives and customer expectations
Developing a high performing team which is truly a centre of excellence and leading and drive the focus and emphasis of a proactive safety culture which compliments a production led environment.
What you will be involved in
Lead and direct a high performing team to deliver signal construction projects to the agreed production / signalling standards, using a disciplined and coordinated approach, maximising effort, and resources.
Promote high performance teams and a high performance and accountable culture
Drive effective workforce planning and ensure rosters are developed as per the Rostering Guidelines maximise efforts and utilisation.
Manage the team budgets ensuring efficient resource use, labour costing and accrual management including reporting is completed and taking corrective actions as required
Ensure people management policies and processes are implemented to optimise performance and an appropriate workplace culture is fostered, includes addressing those behaviours/actions or decisions that are not consistent with organisational requirements and expectations. Plus fostering a positive IR relationship in the team
Lead Sydney Trains Management Systems (such as Visual Management Centre (VMC) with direct reports and ensure practice is in line with organisational requirements
About you
You will have qualifications / significant experience working within a rail construction environment, specifically within a leadership role. You will have tertiary qualifications as a signal electrician or equivalent. Coupled with this you will need to demonstrate sound commercial acumen and decision-making skills and proven ability to drive business unit process improvements with a customer centric approach.
