Where you'll be working

Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. It is a principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.

Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.

The Westmead Hospital Emergency Department (ED) operates 24 hours, 7 days per week and manages all types and levels of illnesses and injuries. As one of six major trauma centres in the state, the ED also cares for people with the most severe physical injuries. Westmead Hospital ED presentation numbers are among the highest in the state, currently around 80,000 per year.

Westmead Hospital is one of Australia’s largest centres for postgraduate training to specialist levels in all fields with over 100 PhD students and other postgraduate students supervised by Westmead Hospital scientists and clinicians. Westmead is home to internationally recognised institutes of health research, the most prominent being the Westmead Millennium Institute. The Westmead Millennium Institute is one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia, conducting research into a wide range of human disorders affecting both adults and children, including infectious and immune diseases, cancer and leukaemia, liver and metabolic diseases, eye and brain related disorders and heart and respiratory disorders.

Cumberland Hospital, co- located with Westmead Hospital provides primary and secondary mental health services to the local population and tertiary acute, extended and forensic mental health services to greater western Sydney and NSW. There is also a range of community mental health residential facilities, recovery support and specialist treatment services located on the campus.

The Trainee works as part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes medical, nursing and allied health professionals. They will work at the Senior resident medical officer (SRMO) level or Junior Registrar level (Depending on level of experience).

The Trainee is directly responsible to the supervising Emergency Medicine Specialist of the day, with overall supervision by the Term Supervisor and the Emergency Department Director.

The Trainee must work effectively with other specialty teams and nursing staff in the wider hospital, to ensure optimal patient care. The Trainee must also interact professionally with clinicians outside of the hospital, including GP’s and community nurses.


What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Trainee in the Emergency Department is to provide clinical care, under appropriate supervision, to patients requiring emergency medical services in a complex clinical environment. This position will provide experience in a critical care environment and have responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with the level of experience of the incumbent.
  The Trainee is expected to function at the minimum of a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) level. 

The Training Program & Opportunities

The following rotations are available to Trainees:

·                     Westmead Emergency

·                     The Children’s Hospital Westmead Emergency

·                     Westmead and Auburn anaesthetics

·                     Westmead ICU

·                     Other rotations may be negotiated depending on availability

It is expected that provisional trainees when eligible will apply to the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for enrolment into training.

Westmead ED is accredited for provisional & advance training with 16 hours/7 days emergency physician cover.

Our teaching program has multiple streams dedicated to different requirements including a weekly registrar teaching. There are also skills days throughout the year specific for provisional trainees and preparation in both the primary and fellowship exam.  

The Training Network

Westmead Emergency Deparment is part of the Network 5 training network that includes Children’s Hospital Westmead ED, Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital ED, Nepean ED, Auburn ED, Orange Hospital ED & Tweeds Hospital ED.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
  2. Must have completed at least two postgraduate years training in an Australian Public Hospital or equivalent (not as an Observer)
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment with commitment to self-education and continuous professional development
  4. Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  5. Ability and willingness to work at the facilities within the Network to deliver patient care and preparedness and ability to participate in 24-hour shift work roster.
  6. Ability to recognise the acutely unwell patient and to initiate immediate management and institute Basic Life Support. Completion of ALS training, or willingness to complete in the first 3 months of appointment
  7. Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
