The ACT Law Society is the peak body for legal practitioners in the ACT. The Society represents, advances, and defends the interests of an independent legal profession in the ACT. They also protect the public interest in the ACT system of justice through efficient regulation of the profession. Moving into an exciting phase of growth – the regulatory function is now expanding, and this new role will play a major part in the regulation and compliance of legal Trust Accounting across the ACT.
How will it work?
The Trust Account Compliance Officer assists the Society by investigating the affairs of law practices to detect when trust money has been improperly applied, including dishonest faults. If you have an investigative nature and experience working in the law industry this is the role for you.
In this role you will report to the Regulatory Services Manager and manage a program to monitor compliance of law practices with legislative Trust Accounting provisions including reviewing and responding to external reports and ensuring appropriate processes are maintained. This means you will be responsible for:
- Supporting the legal investigation function in relation to potential Trust Account issues
- Preparing reports regarding non-compliance with legislative requirements and suspected improper applications of trust money, investigation outcomes and issues.
- Providing technical support to team members responding to Trust Account enquiries.
- Develop guidelines and training on Trust Account requirements and good Trust Accounting practices.
So, who are we looking for?
Well, you are a CPA or CA certified accountant, or you will be eligible to gain certification. Having experience working with lawyers or legal sector experience would also be a huge advantage. Skillsets from an auditing, risk management or insolvency background would transfer into this role seamlessly. Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical as you will be responsible for building capability into future practice leaders and developing training guidelines on Trust Account requirements.
