SMBC is a major international bank with a leading position in the Loan Capital Markets / Syndications, Global Markets and Treasury, Corporate Banking, Project Finance, Financial Institutions and Sponsored / Leverage Finance markets. Working in conjunction with the Head of Loan Capital Markets Australia, the key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to; assistance and support in origination, pricing, structuring, execution, book running and distribution of underwritten and non-underwritten syndicated transactions. These transactions will arise from either the Corporate Banking, Structured Finance teams or Specialized Product teams and therefore you will be required to work closely with stakeholders in those divisions.
You will take an active role in assisting the Head of LCM Australia and other senior members of the team in developing and maintaining relationships within SMBC and within the Australian and Asia Pacific regional bank and non-bank investor market. You will require a strong understanding of current and emerging trends in the Australian and Asia Pacific regional loan market.
This position will be responsible for the following:
- To assist in formulating syndication strategy, bookrunning, sell down and execution of syndicated facilities.
- To assist in the preparation of information memorandum, distribution letters and confidentiality agreements and other activities ancillary to the distribution role.
- To assist in organizing syndication bank meetings and presentations.
- Preparation of term sheets, offer letters, financing proposals and underwriting submissions/ papers.
- Preparation and updating of marketing material for the promotion of the syndication debt products in Australia.
- Credit analysis and preparation of liquidity analysis and sell down strategy to support prospective transactions.
- To assist the branch in meeting its financial performance target in accordance with the company’s risk management and compliance policies and standards.
- To assist team with periodic internal reporting to Singapore management and Planning Dept (local branch and Singapore regional head office).
- To assist with ESG workstreams including pitching, execution, internal reporting and liaising with third party consultants.
- To trade in loan assets in the secondary markets as required and directed by management and stakeholders.
- Preparing underwriting papers in conjunction with senior managers to present to Loan Capital Markets Group, SFDA and CDAPD.
- Maintain close contacts within the investor (banks and non-banks) community with the objective of:
- Opportunities to Co-lead with other banks
- Monitoring other bank activities and judging market responses to specific transactions
- General market information
- Interact with the bank’s GFIG area to identify new investors
- Referring debt opportunities to appropriate branches
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Experience in corporate banking and /or syndication role.
- Experience in structuring loans and negotiating terms and conditions with clients, credit and legal firms.
- Established relationships with clients and banks in the Australian market.
- Solid sales and negotiation skills to business level (or aspirations to develop these skills on the job and through training).
- Ability to make quality presentations to both internal parties (eg Head of Loan Capitals Markets) and clients.
- Experience of developing key stakeholder relationships within a business.
- Strong written and verbal business communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
- Some domestic travel/occasional travel to regional offices.
- University graduate majoring in banking and finance.
