This is a permanent full-time role. Its purpose is to provide exceptional making, repairs and restoration services to violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows at our Chatswood location. The ideal candidate would have industry experience and/or a qualification from one of the following schools:
•The Cremona International School of Violin Making
•The Chicago School of Violin Making
•The Mittenwald School of Violin Making
•The Markneukichnen School of Violin Making
•The North Bennet Street School, Boston
•The Newark School of Violin Making
•Cambridge Violin Makers
Role Duties:
•Quote for and complete repairs and restoration work on customers’ string instruments including:
oGluing cracks and open seams
oPatching and repairing cracks using established methods
o‘Touching Up’ varnish
oReplacing bridges, sound posts, nuts and fingerboards
•Complete specialised repairs and restoration work on stock instruments
•Liaise with suppliers as necessary to obtain parts needed to complete repairs and restoration work
•Perform ‘set ups’ on stock instruments including:
oShaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a bridge
oShaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a sound post
oShaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a fingerboard and fingerboard nut
oShaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting pegs
•Perform key tasks in the manufacturing of new instruments, which in addition to the above ‘set up’ tasks include:
oFitting purfling inlays
oCutting and fitting bass bars
oThicknessing the top and back plates
oBuilding ribs and fitting them to the top and back plates
oCut and fit a neck, peg-box and scroll
•Repairs and restoration to bows including:
oRehairing
oRe-lapping
oRepairing cracks
•Provide advice to customers about their existing instruments, which may be antique or recently made
•Co-ordinate with sales staff
•Organise and provide specialised training to junior team members
•Maintain a safe and tidy workspace
This is a salaried position of between $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 depending on experience
