An exciting opportunity exists for a highly self-motivated teacher to join the Visiting Teacher Service in the Inner East Area, North Eastern Victoria Region. This is an excellent opportunity to use your well-developed skills and progress your career.

The Visiting Teacher Program is managed and led by DE and is within the Region’s Health, Wellbeing and Specialist Services team.

There are four streams of Visiting Teachers – Vision, Hearing, Physical Health and ASD – supporting students with disabilities and impairments across primary and secondary state school. Visiting Teacher’s work from the regional offices and visit schools as caseloads require.

The Visiting Teachers support the inclusion, participation, and engagement of students with impairments and disabilities by teaching disability specific skills and strategies and upskilling school staff and leadership. They work within the classroom environment to develop student skills and student voice, and they consult, direct and teach school staff about the reasonable adjustments required for a student with a disability or impairment to fully engage with their education.

The incumbent is required to practice in accordance with Department of Education policy and procedure as well as the various Professional Codes, Guidelines and Registration Standards set by Victorian Institute of Teachers.

Responsibilities

Visiting Teachers undertake a variety of roles and responsibilities that may include (but are not limited to):

Support Whole School Initiatives

  • Providing specialist advice and support to schools in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of curriculum to ensure full access and inclusion for students with physical disability and/or health impairment, hearing impairment, vision impairment, autism, complex behaviour and learning difficulties. 
  • Working collaboratively with key stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach to promoting access and inclusion related initiatives, liaising with relevant personnel within the region and participating in other related projects.
  • The use of innovative technologies in program delivery to improve access and inclusion to the curriculum for eligible students. This will include the delivery of Visiting Teacher intervention strategies via tele-practice, where relevant.

Enhance Specific Classroom Practices

  • The promotion of effective specific teaching and learning practices and skills to bring about sustained change in classroom practice.
  • Support the classroom teacher to identify the needs of the young person and deliver the necessary adjustments to access their learning. This may include the contribution of specialist advice to support the Disability Inclusion Profile process
  • Providing educational services to students from pre-school transition to VCE.
  • The provision of case support and assistance to other Visiting Teachers and regional staff in the area of physical disability, health impairment, vision impairment, hearing impairment or autism.
  • Undertake other duties related to supporting students with disabilities and impairments, as requested by the Manager, in response to changing priorities or new initiatives, including supporting the rollout of Disability Inclusion.

To be successful in the role you will need to work in a multidisciplinary team, establish and maintain good working relationships with teachers in the school setting, network effectively with health and wellbeing professionals associated with schools.

The Visiting Teacher is employed by the Department of Education and managed by the Regional or Area Visiting Teacher Manager.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE), ongoing position. 

A current Victorian Driver’s license and valid VIT Registration are required for this position.
