Job description

Are you an engaging teacher looking to immerse yourself in an NT community?
 
Located on Gurindji land, approximately 450kms from Katherine, a Year 1 position is currently available!
The school has approximately 200 students from preschool to Year 12, in addition to a playgroup run through the Families as First Teachers Program. The population of the surrounding communities is approximately 750 people, where students come from a diverse cultural and linguistic background. While the majority are Gurindji, the community also includes Warlpiri, Mudburra, and other Indigenous and non-Indigenous families.
 
As the Year 1 teacher, you will utilise the Australian Curriculum, focusing on literacy and numeracy. Other Learning areas include, humanities, science, health and PE. The literacy programs integrate EAL teaching methods and a phonemic approach to reading through the ReadWriteInc program. Standard Australian English is the primary language of instruction, supporting the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing in English to help students succeed in education and employment, and engage meaningfully with the wider Australian community. Each class has two Assistant Teachers working in the classroom, promoting cohesive learning with language and cultural support. The school respects and supports the community and families' efforts to maintain traditions and values as important in the students' educational development.
 
The school has implemented a school-wide positive behaviour system and includes behaviour of the week, Safe4Kids concept of the week, a sports oval, an undercover basketball court, and a canteen. The community has a community shop, medical clinic, childcare, aged-care centre, child and family centre, regional council, arts centre, all weather airstrip and phone reception.
 
Responsibilities include,

  • Planning, preparing and explicitly delivering quality and effective teaching and learning programs, which are consistent with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and relevant curriculum policies, work programs and educational trends.
  • Supporting students through interaction in a variety of settings and through the active development of supportive learning environments and effective behaviour management practices.
  • Providing for the physical, social, cultural and emotional well-being and safety of students whilst at school.
  • Regularly assessing students (diagnostic, formative and summative) for developmental, feedback and reporting purposes.
  • Maintaining student records and samples of work and report on student performance to students, parents, the department and other stakeholders as required.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate interpersonal relationships between the school, parents and community.
Position is full-time for 2024, with a possibility of extending. Shorter term placements will be considered for the right candidate.

  • Wages between $81,739 - $117,225 (plus super)
  • Annual remote allowances of $8,239, paid pro-rata fortnightly with salary. $10,047 with dependents.

What You Need to Succeed!
Registered (or ability to) with TRBNT and a NT Working With Children check (ochre card) in addition to,
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent.
  • Ability to collaboratively plan, prepare and deliver teaching and learning programs to meet the diverse characteristics, needs and learning styles of students; which are consistent with relevant curriculum policies, work programs and education trends.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement effective and inclusive teaching and learning processes, including the use of learning technology and assessment.
  • Regularly assess students (diagnostic, formative and summative) for developmental, feedback and reporting purposes.
  • Maintain student records and samples of work and report on student performance to students, parents, the department and other stakeholders as required.
  • Ability to communicate and relate effectively with students, staff and families through appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to plan and apply appropriate behaviour management strategies that contribute to establishing and maintaining a supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with school staff, parents and members of the local school community in order to establish and develop productive partnerships, in an intercultural environment
  • Commitment to maintain current and relevant professional learning and meet Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
