2025 Psychiatry Registrar
General Role Statement:
The purpose of this role is to assist Senior Medical Staff in the care of patients within the service. Depending on the rotation, this may include daily review of inpatients, participation in ward rounds and coordination of discharge planning on wards, meetings with family and carers, regular review of patients in community mental health clinics or consultation assessments within the general hospitals, Emergency Departments, or in the community with an integrated community care model (including acute, short-term and longer term intensive or ongoing care models).
Registrars are responsible for completing appropriate ward/community paperwork, discharge summaries/letters and legal paperwork required by the Mental Health Act, plus attendance at Mental Health Tribunal hearings as required.
The position involves both in-hours and regular on-call out of hours duties. It is expected that the Registrars abide by NH policies and procedures.
To be successful in this role you will have:
Essential:
- Completed a medical degree and be able to provide evidence of your qualifications.
- For unaccredited registrar applicants, full General Medical Registration status with AHPRA at the commencement of training in Aug 2024.
- For unaccredited registrar applicants, at application time, psychiatry experience as a JMS for a full rotation / term (ie. minimum 10 weeks).
- For SIMG applicants, eligible for Limited Registration with APHRA.
- For SIMG applicants, eligible for the Specialist or SST Pathway with RANZCP
- For SIMG applicants, completed AMC Primary source verification and provide evidence that it is completed.
- Current National Police and Working with Children History Check.
- Be eligible to work in Australia without employer visa sponsorship.
- The Staff Immunisation Questionnaire must be completed by all new employees as part of the mandatory on-boarding process. New employees are not permitted to undertake any activity that requires patient contact prior to clearance by the Staff Immunisation Nurses; this also includes evidence of having the Flu vaccination on a yearly basis and being fully vaccinated against Covid-19. New employees with contra-indications to vaccinations or who decline vaccination are required to attend a face to face consultation with the Immunisation Nurses for appropriate documentation of their contraindications or declination. This must be completed PRIOR to commencing any work with Northern Health.
Desirable:
- For SIMG applicants, at least 24 months of psychiatric experience, which should include a minimum of 6 months psychiatric inpatient unit rotation.

- General knowledge and skills for the assessment and management of mental health problems.
- Maintain an understanding of individual responsibility for patient safety, quality and risk and contribute to organisational quality and safety initiatives.
- Take reasonable care for own safety and wellbeing and that of anyone else that could be affected by their actions.
- Speak up for the safety and wellbeing of patients, consumers, colleagues and visitors and escalate any concerns that have or could impact safety.
- Accept responsibility for ensuring the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and cooperate with the NH in any action it considers necessary to maintain a safe working environment which is safe and without risk.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills including the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
