The Opportunity:

An exciting opportunity exists for enthusiastic Radiology Fellows to join the team at Northern Health. Northern Imaging Victoria is the newest public medical imaging department in Victoria, having gone live in October 2023. We provide a comprehensive and integrated service consisting of Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine/PET.


Our services are delivered across multiple Northern Health sites, with a focus on acute and emergency imaging and intervention at the Northern Hospital Epping, which serves the busiest Emergency Department in Victoria. Outpatient services are based at our new Broadmeadows Hospital imaging department with future expansion of services coming online at Craigieburn and Whittlesea Hospitals in late 2024. Additional expansion at our Epping campus will also see the development of a new Emergency Department, inpatient tower and satellite Imaging department co-located with ED. Our department is equipped with the latest medical imaging equipment and a best of breed RIS-PACS system. We are a friendly, supportive and progressive department with a strong focus on pursuing clinical and academic excellence.

This role requires the Radiology Trainee to have completed the Part 2 FRANZCR.

Northern Imaging Victoria will be offering 3 fellowship positions:

  • Women’s Imaging (Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Breast):  This fellowship will offer comprehensive experience in all facets of Breast imaging and O&G imaging including breast intervention (MRI guided breast biopsy) and contrast enhanced mammography supporting a busy high-volume breast and O&G clinical service.  Fellows will work under fellowship train breast radiologists, O&G radiologists as well as O&G consultant sonologist.  There will be ample opportunity for teaching, participation in all relevant MDMs and research.
  • Body Imaging: (Abdominal Imaging): This program offers specialized training in body computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, abdominal procedures such as FNA and core needle biopsy, fluid drainages, and some limited exposure to gastrointestinal and genitourinary fluoroscopy. The program's objective is to foster the growth of radiologists specializing in abdominal imaging, equipped with comprehensive skills. Fellows will be actively engaged in research and will participate in both MDM and non-MDM clinical meetings. Moreover, the program boasts a robust exposure to IBD, colorectal, urology, and hepatobiliary imaging.
  • Thoracic Imaging (Chest/Cardiac): Strong exposure to all elements of thoracic imaging including interstitial lung disease and percutaneous lung biopsy. This will include supervised presentation at clinic radiological meetings for respiratory medicine, thoracic oncology and interstitial lung disease. The fellowship also encompasses cardiac imaging, including CTCA and CMR. The fellowship curriculum includes guided reading, one-on-one case-based teaching and an expectation to participate in research.
  • All fellows will also maintain participation in general radiology work.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS, MB BCh, MD or equivalent) registrable with AHPRA.
  • Completed Part 2 RANZCR Examinations
  • Broad knowledge in all aspects of Radiology for safe practice including plain film radiography, CT, MRI, US, fluoroscopy and core procedural skills.
  • Demonstrated keenness and initiative to advance in subspecialty skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in medical imaging service delivery.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued improvement and team work.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills that enable the development of professional relationships across a broad range of people.
  • Commitment to excellence in medical imaging, research and medical education.
