Southern River College is continuing to grow as a culturally responsive school and is looking to expand supports for their Aboriginal students. The College recognises the strengths of its Aboriginal students and strives to work with them and their families to build a culturally safe and supportive environment where they feel they belong and are supported in achieving success.

Southern River College is seeking to appoint a dedicated and motivated individual to the role of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO).

They would join our  Wellbeing team to support our Aboriginal students and families. The College currently runs the Deadly Sista Girls program and Bilya Boys Program in a supportive way so students achieve success,

The successful applicant should be organised, friendly, caring and professionally presented.  You would need to be able to display a commitment to building positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and the wider community.  You should work collaboratively as part of a team, and you will ideally be committed to the continual development of your skills and knowledge to provide a growth mindset in your role at the school.

As the AIEO, your role will be to assist in delivering planned education programs and to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment.  We are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic AIEO, who will ideally be able to engage students in different programs, connect with families and liaise between the community and school. The successful applicant will ideally possess a high standard of computer skills, as well as excellent communication skills. An interest in and capacity for engaging young people in education, and supporting young people to develop literacy, numeracy and workplace readiness skills will be an advantage. The capacity to build positive relationships with families and businesses is highly desirable for this role.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
  • Ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
  • Ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Aboriginality is considered essential for this position under section 50(d) of the Western Australian Equal Opportunity Act.

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
