Aboriginal Healthcare Worker TraineeshipSalary $72,000 base plus superannuationLocation: Metropolitan Remand CentreAbout the opportunity:GEO Healthcare is seeking to employ and support Aboriginal Health Worker Trainees. The opportunity allows Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people that have a keen interest in developing a Healthcare career to enroll and complete a Primary Healthcare course/certificate.Qualifying as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner, will enable you to develop both clinical skills and the ability to respond to the social and cultural needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients whilst working in a correctional environment.GEO Healthcare will provide and support a working opportunity at the allocated site upon acceptance of enrolment in an appropriate Primary Healthcare course.GEO Healthcare will offer ongoing support during your traineeship, paid working hours (Trainee Aboriginal Workers will be paid at 80% of the qualified Aboriginal Health Worker rate) and paid time off to attend your course. Upon graduation Trainee’s will be offered full-time employment at the location of your traineeship.GEO Healthcare is an advocate for culturally safe, preventative health care and treatment services to experience health equity. Trainee’s will function within a multidisciplinary team and are required to refer, communicate, and collaborate with other health professionals to advocate for the cultural and health needs of Aboriginal patients.About GEO HealthcareGEO Healthcare employs highly skilled multidisciplinary teams of healthcare practitioners to ensure people in prison can access and receive the healthcare services they need. GEO Healthcare operates in all Victorian Men’s Public Prisons providing primary healthcare services to the prisoner population.GEO Healthcare is a subsidiary of The GEO Group Australia Pty Ltd – a company providing correctional and healthcare services in Australia for over 30 years.On the job:During your traineeship you will be under the supervision of an Aboriginal Health Worker or Practitioner. Overall supervision of the Traineeship Program will be provided by the Manager, Aboriginal Health within GEO Healthcare.This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working to provide a range of clinical primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, including specific health care programs, advice and assistance with, and administration of, medication.Who can apply?

  • Applicants must be 18 years old or older.
  • You must Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander to apply for this position. You must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. (N.B. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Equal Opportunities Act 1977, NSW).
  • Commitment to engage in the Certificate IV in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice as supported by the traineeship.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people and their health and ability to effectively engage, and communicate sensitively, with Aboriginal people to address their health needs.
Primary Healthcare accredited courses:
  • Certificate III Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • Certificate IV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
Course time frame: 18 months – 2 yearsOther requirements:
  • Trainees must remain eligible in their enrolled course to continue employment at GEO Healthcare
  • Valid and current Australian driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory completion of a National Criminal History Check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Ability to work within a prison setting, which will involve direct contact with people in prison associated with the delivery of healthcare.
