Trainees in the GEGAC Academy will participate in a structured work and training program. The training program will include work skills, personal development, career planning, transition to study and cultural components. The trainee will also be supported to engage in further training or study in line with their career choice.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based on Gunaikurnai Country in Bairnsdale, Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not for Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC is a child safe agency and has a zero tolerance of abuse or neglect of children and young people.
Position Purpose
The Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) Trainee will work under the direction and supervision of the Aboriginal Health Worker and will learn how to establish links with local Aboriginal communities to encourage and support the increased use of health services. The role extends to assisting with administrative tasks, supporting clients, providing practical assistance, providing feedback regarding access problems, implementing and evaluating solutions. The trainee will also undertake studies in AHW at either Certificate III or Certificate IV level.
Key Selection Criteria
- Experience in, or sound knowledge of, Koori culture in East Gippsland
- A genuine interest in developing a career in the field of health care
- Knowledge of the health and welfare issues facing the local Aboriginal community.
- The ability to work in a team environment or work independently.
- Ability to work and act in a confidential manner and to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Being organised, reliable, self-motivated and punctual.
- Good communication skills – written, verbal, email, phone.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
- A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander background ESSENTIAL
- Valid Driver’s License, or working towards a driver’s licence ESSENTIAL
- A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with mandatory vaccination directive applying to authorised workers ESSENTIAL
