  • $86,731 – $99,700 + salary packaging + super + 5 weeks annual leave + monthly ADO's

About Social Work

Social Work at The Women’s aims to improve the psychosocial health and wellbeing of women and babies, embracing a view of women’s health that is holistic and considers women’s social, physical, emotional and cultural wellbeing.  Our Social Workers offer support to women through their maternity, neonatal, gynaecological and oncology experiences, and provide information, counselling, support and advocacy in response to health and social needs.

About the role

This role is for a Grade 2 Social Worker who is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and are accepted by the Victorian Aboriginal community as such, to provide culturally specific care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients accessing care at The Royal Women’s Hospital. In this role you will provide direct clinical care to patients, as well as supporting other members of multi-disciplinary teams across the hospital to ensure that we are providing high quality and culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.

You will work closely with the Baggarrook Yurrongi team which offers Caseload midwifery care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and babies, the Women’s Drug and Alcohol Service (WADS) who provide medical care, counselling and support to women with complex substance use and dependence, Social Work and Badjurr-Bulok Wilam and the team of Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers. 

A regular day will see you:

  • Provide quality patient focused care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their carers and communities through culturally safe, competent, evidence-based clinical skills relating to psychosocial assessment, interventions including crisis intervention, short-term counselling, bereavement care, advocacy, community liaison, referral and discharge planning
  • Involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, carers and significant others in medical treatment decision making and care plans, treatment goals and discharge plans as per the patience wishes
  • Work closely with the Baggarrook Yurrongi team or other multidisciplinary teams involved in the care of women and their families
  • Develop and maintain community links with relevant organisations including the Victorian Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation sector 
  • Act as a supportive and positive role model, providing constructive learning experiences, direction and mentorship of staff and students

About you

You will be someone with strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build collaborative working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

You’ll bring with you:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Work as well as meeting eligibility requirements for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and be a person who is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and accepted by the Aboriginal community
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, society and kinship networks and their relevance to the provision of healthcare
  • An understanding of relevant legislation and practice frameworks relating to family violence practice and child protection, including but not limited to the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme (FVISS), Child Information Sharing Scheme (CISS) and the Family Violence Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM) and the Children Youth and Families Act 2005 and the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, short-term counselling, bereavement care, advocacy, community liaison and referral, case management and discharge planning
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and ability to establish and maintain functional networks with a wide variety of health personnel and with other service providers
