The Aboriginal NRM Coordinator/Project Officer contributes strategically by facilitating the implementation of projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with Healthy Country Plans, the 2030 NRM Strategy for Southern Tasmania, and supporting the Aboriginal community’s aspirations and activities in natural resource management. fostering a deeper understanding of cultural, environmental, social, and economic aspects. By actively participating in project planning and delivery, this position enhances organisational approaches and fosters alignment with the aspirations of Palawa people over time
The Aboriginal NRM Coordinator/Project Officer possesses expertise in project management and coordination, grounded in Healthy Country principles and cultural values. Collaborating closely across NRM South Programs and project teams, and the Healthy Country Unit at the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, they optimise project outcomes and facilitate meaningful communication with the Aboriginal community. Operating within a partnership model between NRM South and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, the Coordinator balances their time evenly between both entities to ensure tangible progress towards NRM and Healthy Country goals.
Key duties include:
- Develop and/or contribute to new project design, including cultural, biodiversity, caring for land and sea Country, collaborative management approaches, and carbon management.
- Manage and/or contribute to projects, including project documents (e.g. communications, WHS and other plans), planning, tracking, administration, communications, community engagement, and project monitoring, evaluation, reporting and improvement.
- Assist in implementation of Healthy Country Plan monitoring and review activities.
- Support the development and running of Aboriginal community activities and events on Country.
- Implement project activities with various project partners, including the Water, Biodiversity and Land teams at NRM South, and with the Land and Heritage team at the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.
- Participate in training and professional development (including organising tailored/external training, mentoring and technical support, where needed).
- Work with NRM South leadership to elevate the role of Palawa people in NRM, and facilitate contributions to NRM planning, policy, onground works, and emerging programs e.g. natural capital accounting, emergency preparedness and climate adaptation.
- Represent NRM South and/or the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre at meetings and events with the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
- Promote and communicate the outcomes and relevance of NRM South and/or the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre's work, including identifying risks and opportunities in the external stakeholder environment.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships, particularly with the Palawa community.
- Develop and/or contribute to communications material/promote key messages.
