An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a passionate and dynamic leader, with exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills to join CME as the Adviser/Senior Adviser – Economics and Productivity. This role is responsible for leading evidenced-based policy development maximising value from industry data sets, stakeholder engagement, and management of policy and advocacy priorities within CME’s Industry Competitiveness portfolio.  Success in the role requires close collaboration with resource sector companies, the government, and the community to generate mutual benefit.

Key duties will include:

Reporting to our Director - Policy and Advocacy, the successful incumbent will be focused on the following:

  • Oversee the internal collection and analysis of CME member and other resource sector data including value adding to these activities through utilisation of internal business intelligence (Power BI) capability and collaboration with other industry or government bodies. 
  • Analyse financial and economic data that relates to the resources sector and develop tools or presentations to communicate insights.
  • Build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial relationships with CME stakeholders including existing and potential members, local, state and federal government representatives and community stakeholders. 
  • Represent CME and our members at key events and establish strong networks across the WA community. 
  • Stay abreast of regulatory and other changes to ensure our member companies are kept informed. 
  • Develop and inform evidenced based policy in collaboration with the broader CME team and members on issues impacting the resources sector. Key areas covered include cost competitiveness, tax and royalties, productivity, energy, infrastructure, local government, and planning. 
  • Support and co-ordinate portfolio committees and specialist working groups ensuring effective engagement with our members and external stakeholders, including the preparation of agenda materials, keeping of minutes and general servicing of committees. 
  • Contribute to the progression of legislative and regulatory amendments, as well as improvements to Government assessment processes and timelines, to further the competitiveness of members. 
  • Monitor economic developments, including economic conditions and new advances in research and economic theory, integrating these developments into relevant analysis, outputs within the portfolio work plan.
  • Prepare high-level reports including draft recommendations and submissions outlining industry positions. 
  • Reinforce awareness of the sector’s societal and economic contribution and connection with community. 

What are we looking for in you?

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with a substantial focus on economics or other social sciences.
  • Experience in economic analysis, ideally with a focus on analysis of Government policy or programs.
  • An understanding of State and Federal government policy development and parliamentary processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing department budgets and forecasting.
  • Valid WA driver’s licence. 
  • Experience supervising staff, including developing and mentoring junior staff.
  • Working proficiency in using Cost Benefit Analyses or other decision-making frameworks to inform policy decisions.
  • Interest in contributing to the strong future of the resources sector 
  • A flexible and collaborative approach, with a passion for results 
  • Strong people, relationship management and networking skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple stakeholder needs.
  • Highly effective communication, advocacy, and negotiation skills.
