Role Description
Lead and provide technical expertise in aerial photo digitisation using QGIS of aerial survey photodatasets of Turtle Nesting beaches in the Uunguu Indigenous Protected Area. And provide training and mentoring to Uunguu Rangers to participate in aerial photo analysis.
A summer nesting survey was completed in December 2023 and a winter survey will be completed in August. These data are available in ge-tiff and raw formats.
An existing QGIS tool is available to support the work which involves reviewing aerial survey photo datasets of Turtle Nesting beaches to digitise turtle tracks to obtain nesting density estimates and to identify them to species level. Export track count data in suitable formats for analysis.
Lead a 1-week workshop in Kalumburu Aboriginal Community (WA) with Uunguu Rangers to deliver training in the use of the QGIS tool.
Skills:
- Experience in identification of turtle species from their tracks (essential).
- Experience in the use of GIS (essential).
- Experience in working with indigenous rangers desirable.
Location
Flexible location and hours but must be able to undertake at least 1 week of travel to NW WA.
Duration
60+ days work commencing asap and completed by January 2025.
