Appointment Pool

Willetton Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated and enthusiastic Laboratory Technicians for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

As Laboratory Technician you will, under supervision, provide support to teaching staff in the area of routine chemical and equipment preparation, and construction of simple apparatus for science classes whilst ordering supplies, equipment and managing stock levels. Suitable applicants will perform basic repairs and maintenance on the equipment whilst constructing teaching aids as required.

Additionally, you will be responsible for the labelling, maintaining and safe storing of laboratory chemicals, equipment and resources and the disposal of chemical, physical, and biological laboratory materials.

Suitable applicants should have initiative, good interpersonal skills, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as exceptional organisational skills. You will ideally be motivated and possess the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Willetton SHS is one of the largest schools in Western Australia, drawing its student enrolment from diverse geographic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. With a student population in excess of 2700 and approximately 230 teaching staff and 145 support staff on campus the school is inclusive and comprehensive providing courses for Years 7 to 12. It is the school of choice for many local and international families.

The VET learning area is no exception, conducting rigorous data analysis for improvement in student performance and engaging students in a challenging and relevant curriculum. The school continues to undergo major building upgrades to complement the vision of providing exceptional education facilities for all our students.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge of general science to Year 12 level or equivalent knowledge or experience.
  • Organisational and time management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to use computers and a range of application software packages.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices, laboratory safety requirements and procedures and a willingness for further training related to safety.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
