What is the role?
The AFP is looking for motivated individuals ready to launch themselves into an agile and fast paced career. The Intelligence and Covert Services (ICS) command is seeking individuals with the aptitude and desire to become the intelligence, data and public safety, and policing coordination members of the future across the command in a variety of roles.
ICS offers a broad and rewarding career through a variety of exciting roles in our operational areas; Intelligence Operations, National Operations Coordination, Covert and Technical Operations, and Human Intelligence.
Job opportunities will expose you to police communications and situational awareness, intelligence and dissemination, information gathering, covert analysis and witness protection, human intelligence, digital collection, data processing, and specialist electronic services. Members will be supported to evolve into the analysts, technologists and support officers of an operational frontline command ready for the future.

What will you do with your career in ICS
Intelligence (Intelligence Officer)
- Plan, collect, collate, analyse and disseminate intelligence, including during police operations.
- Use your written and verbal skills to brief intelligence consumers.
- Undertake intelligence and information management and administrative tasks.
- Identify and interpret information and data obtained in an ethical manner, which is then used to inform assessments and reach conclusions to meet a specified user requirement.
- Work collaboratively within the immediate team environment, as well as with other members in the AFP and the broader intelligence community.
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of the intelligence environment.
Applicants will have the ability to demonstrate contemporary experience in an intelligence role or a sound understanding of the role of intelligence in law enforcement. AFP Intelligence Operations offers diverse roles delivering tactical, operational and strategic intelligence, with opportunities for national and international deployments.
Covert Analysis & Assurance (Monitor)
- Work as part of a team in achieving individual and team outputs through demonstrated analytical, communication and organisational skills.
- Timely monitoring of telecommunications interception (TI) product.
- Provide summaries of TI product in a clear, concise and appropriate manner, highlight the relevant points.
- Identify and communicate operationally relevant information to a Senior Monitor or Team Leader.
- Utilise AFP and computer-based information systems to interrogate, input, collate, and retrieve data for operational support.
- Undertake a range of operational support tasks, including team administrative duties when required.
- Work on a Rostered Operations shift pattern, as per Section 20 of the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020.
Applicants who demonstrate appropriate skills and experience may be considered for embedment in various operational positions including Major Incident Rooms and/or Enduring Risk Investigations.
National Operations State Service Centre (Watch Floor)
- Provide radio and telecommunication support to frontline policing and protective service.
- Coordinate responses to alarm activations and liaise with key holders and dispatch units.
- Monitor Computer Aided Dispatch and Mobile Responder to ensure appropriate situational awareness of unit locations and job attendance.
- Under direction of the Watch Floor Sergeant, support the response to critical incidents at airports and Protected Establishments around Australia.
- Search for entities using both open source and AFP internal systems to support critical incidents as well provide after-hours assistance for urgent and critical matters for international teams.
- Manage border alerts and alert activations, including liaison with relevant government stakeholders.
- Operate in the AFP’s national call centre, managing queries in relation to requests/reports from the public, airport watch list and the family law court, as well communication with mental health consumers.
- Work on a Rostered Operations shift pattern as per Section 20 of the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020.
Applicants who demonstrate appropriate skills and experience may be considered for interstate or international deployments as part of National State Service Centre (NOSSC) communications teams in Major Incident Rooms and/or Incident Coordination Centres. Applicants who have, or can obtain, a Cert IV in Government Investigations and demonstrate relevant experience can progress to professional investigator roles.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Strong aptitude for problem solving and analytical processing
- Demonstrated ability to proactively contribute within a team.
- Excellent communication skills, including high-level writing, editing and presentation skills, and effective cross-cultural communication.
- Candidates will be required to complete a Psychological assessment to be able to progress through this process.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Demonstrate self-awareness and a commitment to personal development.
- Ability to assess, evaluate and analyse information to develop arguments using logic and evidence.
- An understanding of the role of law enforcement investigations and intelligence.
- Proven and applied data literacy, information management and applied research skills.
- Maintain timely and appropriate verbal communications under pressure, apply verbal de-escalation skills and deliver professional customer service to diverse government stakeholders and members of the public.
- Manage a high volume of tasks, prioritise and triage urgent matters appropriately.
- Tertiary qualifications in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) or previous experience in technology and/or information assessment, processing and analysis.
Additional Information
- These positions are AFP Band Level 3.
- The roles which are indicated Rostered Operations in the role description attract a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays). In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their Base Salary which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
- You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position(s) as outlined above.
- Proof of a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used) will be required if an offer of employment is made.
