Our team

The Minerals, Energy and Groundwater (MEG) Division acquires, analyses and delivers precompetitive data, information, tools and new thinking to support the sustainable development of Australia’s minerals, energy and groundwater resources. We provide authoritative and independent technical advice to the Australian Government and promote the responsible development of Australia’s natural resources.

Within MEG we seek to:

  • Enable our technological and renewable energy future, with precompetitive geoscience programs to support a pipeline of critical minerals discoveries.
  • Lead Australia’s low-emissions future by proving up large-scale carbon abatement strategies including green hydrogen, green metals and carbon, capture and storage.
  • Secure a sustainable future for Australia’s groundwater resources through basin assessments and regional groundwater studies using a consistent national framework.

The role

This role sits within the Onshore Seismic and Magnetotellurics Section and is responsible for managing and maintaining electronic, power system and instrumentation advice and functions across passive seismic and magnetotelluric instruments within the Branch.

In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for the management of passive seismic and magentotelluric instruments and deployment systems. 
  • Carry out repairs, maintenance and testing on low power (12V) Long period magnetotellurics and passive seismic instrumentation 
  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on scientific reference electrode technology 
  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on ancillary equipment including cables, connectors and others items 
  • Manage and coordinate equipment acceptance, inventory and warehousing as required
  • Maintain technical documentation including, maintenance histories, equipment logs 
  • Work closely with key internal and external stakeholders to communicate technical issues and facilitate successful outcomes.
  • Undertake field travel across Australia to assist in the management and maintenance of instrument systems
  • Undertake procurement in accordance with the requirements of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.

  • Demonstrated ability and use of electronics equipment
  • Demonstrated ability in stakeholder/client engagement and ability to communicate your advice and messages clearly 

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications 

  • Certificate lll in electronics and communications is highly desirable 

Experience and or qualifications in one or more of the following is desirable but not essential

  • Test, and repair of scientific instrumentation with a focus on seismic and magentotelluric technology
  • Test and repair of electronic equipment  
  • Low voltage DC and solar power
