About This Opportunity
The Biological Resources Unit (BR) manages the laboratory animal production and research facilities for the University of Queensland.
We are seeking a Technical Assistant to provide care and husbandry to aquatic animal species within the UQ Biological Resources Aquaria.
Reporting to the Manager, UQBR Aquatics Facilities, the role is responsible for a range of technical and other aquatic-related tasks to support the University's research endeavours.
This role is located at the St Lucia Campus and requires some work outside of normal working hours, including participation on the weekend/public holiday roster.
Key responsibilities will include:
Adherence to regulatory guidelines (IBC, OGTR, DAFF and OH&S)
Liaising with researchers, staff, visitors and stakeholders
Monitor and report the health and welfare of aquatic animal colonies.
Provide optimal care and husbandry to wildtype and transgenic aquatic animals according to best ethical guidelines and internal standard operating procedures
Maintain accurate and up to date colony and facility compliance records.
Assist with equipment sterilising, cleaning, storage, and basic maintenance.
Contribute to the safe and efficient operations of technical equipment.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for up to 3 years.
At HEW level 3, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $62,440.83 - $68,729.06, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $73,055.77 - $80,413.00 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
About You
Completion of certificate III in Aquaculture (TAFE QLD or an interstate equivalent qualification) or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Foundational knowledge and understanding of aquaculture techniques, aquatic animal handling and responsible colony breeding.
Capacity to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines.
Capacity to relate well to and liaise effectively with a wide variety of people including staff, researchers, students and suppliers.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
Knowledge of OH&S, OGTR, DAFF Biosecurity (AQIS) regulatory requirements
Knowledge of “The NHMRC Code of Practice for the Care and use of Animals for Scientific Purposes”
Experience in scientific research environment
