Job description

About the role:

The Conducted Energy Device (CED) Program is equipping frontline police and protective service officers (PSOs) with CEDs through a state-wide deployment over a 3-year period. Within the project, a Training Stream is responsible for the coordination and delivery of training to staff across the state.

VPS3 Assistant Instructors are sought to work alongside police instructors in delivering both classroom and practical/technical CED training to frontline members. Multiple positions are available at the Victoria Police Academy, Craigieburn and Waurn Ponds.

VPS3 Assistant Instructors will be responsible for ensuring safety requirements are upheld during the training sessions and to support police instructors in delivering dynamic training. These positions will be diverse, require flexibility and are likely to undertake a wide variety of administrative and project support work in addition to the Assistant Instructor and safety officer duties.

A good general fitness level is required for scenarios and practical role-playing activities.

VPS3 Assistant Instructors will also perform safety officer roles for Foundation Training and/or sworn Bi-Annual Operational Safety and Tactics Training (OSTT).

Please note that shift work will be required with AM/PM shift start times (no night shift). Some weekend and public holiday work will be required dependent on rostering requirements. You may be required to deliver training at alternative training venues. Some intrastate travel between training venues will be required.

Upon commencement, successful applicants will undergo four (4) weeks of orientation/onboarding and an intensive training induction program, based at the Police Academy in Glen Waverley. This training will be conducted Monday to Friday and is expected to commence from 19th August 2024. This will cover both CED instruction and safety officer training.

Your duties will include:

  • Delivering training and supporting police instructors in the presentation of lessons on prepared topics in accordance with course objectives.
  • Role playing for scenarios.
  • Monitoring and assessment of training activities against clear criteria.
  • Setting up equipment and areas for training.
  • Packing up and storage of equipment after training.
  • Actively monitoring safety during training.
  • Updating qualification records.
  • Providing a range of administrative, clerical and support to the CED Program, operational safety units, and People Development Command (PDC), as required.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • A good general fitness level.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal.
  • Robustness, agility, and effective multitasking capability.
  • Initiative in identifying issues and solutions around training delivery and the promotion of safety in the workplace.
  • High ethical and professional behaviour both on and off duty, including professional behaviour, language and boundaries with course participants.
  • Above standard work ethic and personal discipline.
  • Experience in an education or training environment would be highly regarded, but not essential.
  • Qualifications in training, safety, and/or education would be highly regarded, but not essential.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • Eight (8) x full-time, fixed term positions until 30 September 2026. These positions are located at Victoria Police Academy, 1 View Mount Road, Glen Waverley 3150.
  • Eleven (11) x full-time, fixed term positions until 30 September 2026. These positions are located at the Craigieburn Operational Safety Unit, 77 Rushwood Drive, Craigieburn 3064.
  • One (1) x full-time, fixed term position until 30 September 2026. This position is located at Waurn Ponds Police Station, 13 Rossack Drive, Waurn Ponds 3216.
  • These positions require shift work as indicated in the Position Description (as attached to the advertisement).
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • Holder of a current Victorian Drivers Licence or interstate equivalent.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
