About the RoleThe School of Historical and Philosophical Studies seeks to appoint a Teaching Specialist in History on a part-time. fixed-term basis until June 2027. We welcome applications from historians specialising in colonialism or imperialism, with the ability to teach the history of the British Empire 1750 - 1900, the history of violence, and the long history of globalisation.Working closely with the Discipline Chair and colleagues in History, this position will primarily coordinate undergraduate classes in our history major: 'HIST20089 Britain's Empire: Power and Resistance', 'HIST30068 A History of Violence' (co-coordination), and 'HIST40037 The Long History of Globalisation' (2024 and 2025 only).Additionally, you may supervise 4th-year honours students and assist with teaching and administrative tasks within the discipline.Your responsibilities will include:
  • Coordination of the teaching activities of specified subjects in the mode of delivery required (e.g. classroom, blended, online). This includes ensuring that tutors are provided with relevant information and that matters raised by tutors are appropriately responded to;
  • Development of teaching materials, including tutorial guidelines for tutors; subject guides, online readings, and regular maintenance of subject sites on the Learning Management System (LMS);
  • Preparation and delivery of lectures and tutorials or seminars to a high standard;
  • Setting assessment tasks where required, coordinating assessment processes, and recording/reporting component and final results;
  • Marking assessment, providing timely feedback to students and recording results into the appropriate results recording system;
  • Effective and efficient communicate with students in relation to readings, weekly topics, skills development and assessment;
  • Selection of, consultation with, and supervision of tutors or seminar assistants (where applicable) and providing written tutorial guidelines regarding teaching, marking, and directed consultations with students.
Who We Are Looking ForWe are seeking a committed and engaging educator with experience of teaching at tertiary level, with a commitment to inclusivity in student learning, and the ability to work collaboratively with students.You will possess extensive organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills including a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.This position offers a unique opportunity to fostering your own academic and professional growth within a collaborative and supportive environment.You will also have:
  • A completed or near completed PhD in History with a focus on colonialism or imperialism;
  • Capacity to teach the history of the British Empire 1750 - 1900, the history of violence, and the long history of globalisation;
  • A capacity to supervise 4th-year honours research;
  • Demonstrated strong record of undergraduate teaching experience, working positively and cooperatively with students, in a range of teaching delivery modes;
  • Experience in managing and supporting staff and fostering an effective teaching team.
