About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to support the delivery of one of the most significant threatened fauna and ecological restoration programs in NSW history.
The Assistant Project Officer will support the NPWS feral predator free area program including the reintroduction of locally extinct animal species to a network safe havens across NSW National Parks.
The role will involve the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic and operational planning documents for the management, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of biodiversity (including locally extinct and extant species), threats and ecosystem health to ensure processes and actions are appropriate to meet statutory obligations, DPIE policy requirements and deliver on the objectives of the NSW Feral Predator-Free Area program.
The Assistant Project Officer will support a small team of geographically dispersed ecologists delivering and monitoring this innovative conservation program.
About the program
National Parks and Wildlife Service is currently developing a network of new, carefully chosen feral predator-free areas covering diverse habitat types and protecting species with high susceptibility to predation, maximising the number of species protected. Once feral predators are eradicated from these areas, up to 28 locally extinct species will be reintroduced. This will include species that are extinct in NSW such as the iconic bilby and the establishment of new populations of other threatened species such as the critically endangered long-footed potoroo. The program will provide measurable conservation benefits for at least 50 threatened species.
