Job description

The UTS Data Science Institute (DSI) within the Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) is a collaborative impact-focused data science group delivering change for both industry and the wider community. The Institute delivers integrated applied research, linking preliminary data analytics, data engineering and innovative data science. The Data Science Institute is led by Distinguished Professor Fang Chen, the winner of the Eureka Prize for Data Science.

We were among the first Australian institutions to receive the Athena SWAN Bronze Accreditation for our commitment to addressing gender equity in STEMM disciplines. About the role

The UTS Data Science Institute is looking to recruit a research-onlyAssociate Professorin responsible, ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence to be part of a collaborative impact-focused data science group delivering change for both industry and the wider community. This role offers an exciting opportunity to address the complex ethical challenges and societal implications of AI while shaping the future of responsible AI technologies.

The role is exclusively focused on leading the delivery of research in and for the real world, with a particular focus on enabling industry and government to realise ethical and responsible artificial intelligence outcomes. We're seeking passionate researchers to explore key areas such as fairness and bias mitigation, transparency and explainability, privacy and data protection, accountability and responsibility frameworks, robustness and security enhancement, human-AI collaboration, ethical decision-making processes, societal impact assessment, global ethics and governance, and ethical AI education and awareness.

You will be at the cutting-edge of designing and delivering data science initiatives with Australian government and industry partners, transforming the way Australian leaders and businesses make decisions and innovate with data and artificial intelligence, and will be pioneering approaches for the design, implementation and evaluation of systems, processes and practices that adhere to emerging ethical AI principles and guidelines.

About you

As an Associate Professor, you will play a pivotal role in leading research endeavors that demand a high level of expertise in data science and project management. You will have demonstrated awareness of ethical and responsible AI principles and a knowledge of evolving industry trends.Other requirements will include:

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science,
  • Strong background in research, marked by a notable publication track record
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in responsible artificial intelligence, human-centred AI and/or ethical artificial intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and author successful grant funding proposals in close collaboration with industry and government partners and colleagues within and across universities.
  • Multiple years leading data science research teams in the delivery of applied and/or industry-facing projects and programs

Base Salary Range: $172,048 to $188,604 pa (Level D)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
