About JOURNEY

We’re a behaviour consultancy providing specialist assessments and interventions to support Melbournians to do more of what they want to do and less of what they don’t. Our multidisciplinary team work with children and adults and focus specifically on helping clients with mental health difficulties, autism and other developmental disabilities not just to reach their goals but to thrive in life. We get complexity and know how to work with individuals, families and systems to create opportunities and achieve real change. Our work is seriously interesting and seriously rewarding. We love what we do and have the leadership, skills and drive to ensure all of our clients and our team achieve their greatest potential. At JOURNEY our work is firmly grounded in evidence-based, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming practices. We’re also serious about ethics and maintain the highest standards in sensitive, inclusive and ethical approaches.

Your new role

As a Behaviour Support Practitioner with JOURNEY you will be part of a passionate team, dedicated to advancing the very best in evidence-based practice and innovation. Following a full and comprehensive orientation and induction, you will be supported to begin to gradually increase your client work, fulfilling all of the activities of a well-rounded practitioner. You will use a range of skills to develop and implement high quality Behaviour Support Plans, improving the lives of adult clients with a range of presentations including mental health diagnoses, intellectual disability and autism.  While this particular position will have an adult focus you are free to mix up your client load with children if desired. You will work across a range of settings; utilising our beautiful clinic rooms or seeing clients out in the community, visiting family homes, schools, supported accommodation and other programs. Along the way you will be supported by your Clinical Supervisor, Allied Health Team Leader and Clinical Director to learn and develop skills in specific areas, covering both your clinical skills and overall development as a professional.  You will also collaborate regularly with your team members to share knowledge, gain support and provide secondary consultation where required.  Some of the activities you will engage in on a day-to-day basis include:

  • Working with client presentations ranging from moderate to complex with a focus on addressing behaviours of concern, supporting goal achievement and improving quality of life.
  • Completing Functional Behaviour Assessments as well as other assessments utilising formal assessment tools and clinical interviewing
  • Developing evidence-based therapeutic and behavioural interventions tailored to the needs of the client and their support network
  • Working collaboratively with clients, families, support workers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to develop and document person-centred and evidence-based Behaviour Support Plans
  • Support clients, families and professionals to work towards the reduction of restrictive practices, in line with requirements of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
  • Assist to coach families, support staff and others in understanding the person, their difficulties and how to implement strategies identified
  • Liaise with a range of other professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team approach, including interface with mainstream services
  • Facilitate case conferences with a range of professionals and promote development of a consistent approach to support and intervention

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, Behavioural Science or a related discipline
  • Registration with the relevant body (where applicable) e.g., AHPRA, AASW, PACFA
  • Minimum one year's experience as a Behaviour Support Practitioner or in a related field
  • Registration with NQSGC as a Behaviour Support Practitioner at Core level
  • Post graduate qualification in Positive Behaviour Support or Applied Behaviour Analysis desirable but not essential
  • Experience working with clients with mental health difficulties, intellectual disability and/or autism
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise and work collaboratively with a range of other professionals to achieve identified goals
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills, including experience with report writing.
