Youth Justice

  • Ongoing, Full time
  • Locations: St Marys - Cobham Youth Justice Centre
  • Clerk Grade 5/6, Salary ($93,295 - $102,941 pa), plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading plus generous annualised allowance ($25,143 - $25,779 pa) for working on weekends and public holidays.

Your role

Bail Coordinators work 4pm-3am on a roster pattern with a generous annualised shift allowance for working weekends and public holidays.

Please note:this role is based within its own office within the administrative building of Cobham Youth Justice Centre and is not able to be undertake remotely.

The Bail Coordinator provides a range of bail intervention options after hours (4pm-3am 365 days a year) for NSW Police across the State, in order to reduce the number of young people in custody on bail and who require accommodation or other casework assistance. Youth Justice has responsibilities under the Close the Gap strategy to reduce the number of First Nations people entering custody, and our priority is to engage with Aboriginal communities and organisations that support this aim.

What you'll do

The Bail Coordinator, reporting to the Team Leader, undertakes after hours assessments by phone of a young person's suitability for bail, as well as actively seeking to divert young people from custody where appropriate.

The role coordinates and monitors placements across NSW, and liaises closely with NSW Police, funded service providers, Youth Justice Centres, Child Protection and Permanency Helpline, as well as maintaining close links with community networks. This role also maintains statistical databases in accordance with relevant legislation and agency policies.

What we're looking for

  • Current NSW Working with Children Check clearance.
  • Current Driver's licence and willingness to travel.

Appointments are subject to reference checks. Some roles may also require the following checks/ clearances:

  • National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014
  • Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012

In additional to meeting the above essential requirements the successful applicant will have

  • Experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system as it applies to children and young people is highly desirable.
  • Capacity to work independently and proactively engage and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure child centred approaches to homelessness are developed and maintained.
  • Ability to work within a small, highly enthusiastic team, who pride themselves on their initiative, flexibility, and strong commitment to achieving positive outcomes for children and young people.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adopt a flexible approach to work in order to adapt to quickly changing work demands and priorities.
  • Have exceptional communication, and customer service skills, as well as an understanding and capacity to work with complex young people who face a variety of challenging issues such as disability, cognitive impairment, socio-economic disadvantage.
