Campus Counsellor 

(9 Months Maternity Leave Position – 3 Days per week)

JMC is a creative higher education provider specializing in design, music, performing arts, film/TV, animation, and game design. The JMC Counselling Service is based in South Melbourne and offers confidential and free services to our enrolled students - sessions can be facilitated both online and face to face, on an appointment only basis.  

The aim of counselling is to provide both practical and therapeutic support to enhance student well-being and academic progress.

The Counsellor's role is two-fold:

Providing Therapeutic Services:  
* Developing a strong therapeutic relationship to understand each student and how their current issues may impact their university experience. 
* Drawing upon evidence-based and trauma informed practices, the counsellor utilizes therapeutic modalities that may include, psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapies, mindfulness and person-centered therapy.

Manage Counselling Service:  
* Managing and administering the counselling service, ensuring its efficient operation. 
* Fulfilling administrative duties such as, student correspondence/email requests and appointment scheduling, 
* Coordinating with academic staff on policy matters, 
* Compiling quarterly statistics 
* Liaising with external support agencies providing specialist support for students 
* Aiding the Campus Director with relative issues on campus and critical/emergency incidents when possible
* Work independently and autonomously within the larger campus structure

 Requirements ● Counselling/psychology or social work degree

• Minimum five years, experience in either a mental health counselling service, private practice or a university counselling setting.
• Experience working with young adults.
• Providing counselling from a trauma informed position, understanding of trauma and complex trauma and how it may play out in a student’s personal and academic experience.
• Demonstrated ability in counselling which reflects current therapeutic practices in working with young adults, who may come from a variety of backgrounds. 
• Previous experience working with a diverse client population, disabilities/neurodiversity/gender/ethnicity/ 
• Strong organizational skills with an ability to manage both the clinical requirements of the position and the administrative requirements. 
• Familiarity with legal obligations relating to child safety (e.g. Mandatory reporting)
• Registration with one of the following professional bodies:          AHPRA/APS/AASW/PACFA/ACA 
• WWCC & National Police Check
• Appropriate references from current and previous employers
• While an interest in the creative arts or experience in mental health within the creative industry is advantageous, it is not a strict requirement for this role.
