About the Role
Primary Purpose

The Student Wellbeing Officer is a crucial figure dedicated to providing universal pastoral care and wellbeing support to students, irrespective of their faith or beliefs. Serving as a role model, this role significantly contributes to school communities by fostering student engagement and strengthening connections with parents and the broader community. Adaptability is key, as the Officer tailors their approach to address the specific needs of each school.

The Officer, while not engaged in counselling, collaborates with the schools leadership team and specialist staff to provide effective Tier 1 support, general strategies, and interventions for overall Student Wellbeing. Additionally, they may contribute to targeted Tier 2 interventions under the direction of school leadership for students requiring extra support. This position aligns with the Queensland Government’s Student Wellbeing Officer Program (SWOP) and the Australian Government’s National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP), or direct employment by the school, with specific employment and reporting obligations depending on funding.

Key Result Areas

Success is measured by active engagement in and promotion of BCEs vision, mission, and strategic goals, along with collaboration to understand student needs, fostering positive classroom environments, modelling appropriate behaviour, and supporting students in navigating challenges. The Officer actively contributes to program design and implementation, listens to students, provides feedback, and refers them to counselling services and appropriate resources. Encouraging open communication, supporting students during transitions, and fostering relationships with the wider community are also crucial success criteria.

Success Criteria

Eligibility to work in Australia, possession of a Blue Card or Teacher registration with QCT, and adherence to National Principles for Child Safe Organizations (NPCSO) are essential.

Qualifications

  • Certificate IV qualification in Pastoral Care, Youth Work, equivalent or higher certificate with at least two competencies in mental health, making appropriate referrals, working with young people or cultural awareness and support.
  • Completion of the professional learning package, ‘Responding To and Preventing Cyberbullying’ delivered by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner within three months of commencing and every two years thereafter.

Note 1: The Student Wellbeing Officer may be ‘working towards’ the above qualifications.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a pastoral care or wellbeing role working with children and young people, with preference, in a school context.

Capabilities
To succeed in this position, you will demonstrate:

  • A commitment to the safeguarding of children and promote a culture where student protection is the responsibility of everyone.
  • A commitment to and understanding of the purpose and mission of the Catholic Church and Catholic schools.
  • A commitment to uphold the expected standards of behaviour set out in BCE’s Code of Conduct, including our organisational values and all relevant policies and procedures.
  • A commitment and capacity to work in a team to support Student Wellbeing and responsive to the directions of specialist teaching staff.

To be eligible to be considered for this role you will:

  • hold a Paid Employee Positive Notice Blue Card prior to commencement;
  • be eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment; and
  • have a commitment to and understanding of the ethos and traditions of Catholic Education.
