Role impact & contribution

This Category Officer role is within the Government Waste Management and Resource Recovery (Waste management) team comprising 4 staff. The waste management team sits within the broader Goods & Services team at NSW Procurement that category manages several procurement categories including waste management category.

The waste management contract 9698 is a mandated whole-of-government agreement that is used by the government departments across NSW for the collection and disposal of waste and resource recovery. A copy of the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 can be obtained from NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041. 

Contract 9698 is a five-year agreement scheduled to expire on 1 November 2025, with another 5-year extension option available. It has three important waste streams General waste and recycling, Secure destruction, and Clinical waste. Total annual value of the agreement is in the vicinity of about $40m and is utilised by more than 2,500 government sites across NSW. New government sites continue to be onboarded onto contract 9698 as they get identified.

Over the last couple of years, the waste management team has streamlined the data management processes and have introduced Power BI for data analysis / reporting and also Power Apps to enable efficient onboarding of new government sites onto contract 9698.

Contract 9698 is a data intensive category; good excel / analytical skills coupled with good communication and stakeholder management will help the applicant to be successful in this role. The role will be ideal for any applicant that wants to move from analytics/systems background to procurement or any procurement professional wanting to expand their skills.

The successful applicant will be supporting the waste management team and reporting directly to the Associate Director that leads the waste management category team.

What you can bring to the role

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Experience working with data, spreadsheets, and systems to generate reporting and dashboards.
  • Possess strong analytical excel skills, Microsoft Office suite including Power Bi, Power Apps and other analytical tools.
  • Experience in managing database and ability to provide data insights.
  • Interest in creating a greener environment and driving sustainability.
  • Keen to work in a procurement environment and help government departments drive their waste management strategies by leveraging your data analytics skills.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement, while controlling and managing costs.
  • Excellent communication and ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage projects, solve problems, meet deadlines whilst maintaining a high quality of work.
  • Desire to work, grow and develop a career within NSW Treasury.
