Job description

The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB) are the caretakers of Perth’s cemeteries, entrusted to commemorate the lives of Western Australians now and into the future. We respectfully help family and friends honour the lives of loved ones and safeguard memories for future generations.

MCB is recruiting for a pool of Burials staff to fill vacancies for the next 12 months at our Karrakatta, Padbury, Fremantle, Midland, Guildford and Rockingham sites.

About the role

We are seeking compassionate and professional workers to join our Burials Teams, to provide a seamless and high-quality service to clients in our beautiful cemeteries. 

The Cemetery Worker (Burials) is responsible for the safe preparation of grave sites and the safe interment of the deceased in graves, vaults or Mausoleums and re-instating the site after interment.

Burials Workers will be responsible for:

·        The safe preparation of grave sites (either manually (e.g. using a shovel) or mechanically (e.g. using an excavator, skid steer and/or tractors)

·        The safe interment of the deceased in graves, vaults or crypts, and re-instating the site after interment.

·        Meet and greet funeral processions and provide assistance as required.

·        Backfill grave, removing all excess materials and leaving the grave in a safe and clean state.

·        Undertake Mausoleum worksite activities

·        Identify and check accuracy of the location of the grave site.

·        Liaise with Funeral Directors regarding any safety issues and sight and sign relevant paperwork.

·        Load and transport vehicles, ensuring vehicles are driven in a safe and appropriate manner on site.

·        Clean and maintain all plant, tools and equipment used in the preparation of graves.

·        Undertake exhumations, lifts of coffins or deepening of gravesites to accommodate multiple coffins in line with standard operating procedures.

Our Burials team members may be required to assist the operational teams with other operational activities such as cremations, garden/grounds maintenance and care and other operational activities as required and directed.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. The recommended applicant(s) will need to provide a National Police Clearance prior to appointment that is less than 6 months old from date of issue or obtain one prior to appointment. A criminal conviction may not preclude you from gaining employment.
  2. Australian permanent residency is a minimum requirement for permanent appointment to the West Australian Public Sector. To be eligible for a fixed term appointment you must have documentary evidence of your entitlement to live and work in Australia for the duration of the contract.
  3. You will need to pass a pre-employment medical, including and alcohol and other drugs test, prior to any offer of employment
