Established in 1862, the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) is the primary provider of structural firefighting services in South Australia. The MFS is responsible for the protection of the SA community from the effects of fire, chemical incidents, and other emergencies. With a workforce of more than 1,200 staff across 37 sites, MFS is committed to providing high level emergency services while continuing to be innovative and ensuring a strong focus on education, prevention and building resilience.
Reporting to the Office of the Minister for Police, Emergency Services and Correctional Services, the Chief Officer (Chief) is responsible for executive management and leadership within the MFS, particularly in leading strategic, tactical, and targeted advice and services. This role will involve overseeing the delivery of high quality and valued emergency services to the South Australian community through the provision of sound and complex advice on firefighting operations, operational issues, processes, policies, and governance. The Chief will drive the MFS’ strategic vision, lead and direct staff, build and maintain strong partnerships with various national and state stakeholders, oversee governance, legislative and statutory requirements, risk management and financial management. The Chief will cultivate and promote a unified organisational culture consistent with the MFS vision and values.
The successful candidate must have proven experience in firefighting service, particularly the ability to lead in emergency management and emergency services. The MFS is seeking a strategic and dynamic leader with strong risk management experience, financial management experience, excellent negotiation, advocacy and communication skills, as well as the ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Candidates with change management, media and public relations skills, and tertiary qualifications in a management discipline or similar are highly desirable for this role. The successful candidate must hold a valid Driver’s Licence.
