Job description

An exciting opportunity to join our growing team as a Clinical Measurements Scientist in respiratory! Join our friendly and supportive team of Respiratory Scientists from various backgrounds. 

Queensland Respiratory Services offer a full range of lung function and allergy testing, at 15 locations across Queensland, backed by the largest private respiratory physician group in the state.

This casual position involves working a minimum of one day a week at our busy Brisbane based laboratories; The Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower and St Andrew's Hospital in Spring Hill. You may also be offered shifts to cover our various other labs located North, South or West of Brisbane. You will be required to conduct pulmonary function testing on patients of varying ages and health status according to the protocols outlined by the ATS, ERS and TSANZ. You will be responsible for report writing, administration tasks, assisting with quality control procedures, and general lab management. 
 
Standard tests conducted:

  • Spirometry and flow-volume loops
  • Gas transfer factor
  • Body plethysmography
  • FeNO
  • 6-minute walk test
  • Respiratory muscle strength testing (MIPS/MEPS/SNIP)

Advanced tests:

  • Bronchial provocation (Mannitol & Hypertonic Saline)
  • Allergen skin prick test
  • High altitude simulation
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)
  • Any other tests designated by the Senior or Chief Scientists

Role Responsibilities:

Produce accurate and prompt reports on pulmonary function tests and maintain a professional standard of record-keeping for such tests.

Operate and maintain equipment within the laboratory according to the laboratory and manufacturer's established procedures. This includes:

                               i)  Calibration

                               ii)  Quality control

                               iii) Preventative maintenance

                               iv) Basic troubleshooting procedures

                               v)  Infection control / cleaning

  • Follow general laboratory procedures regarding professional conduct, dress code, punctuality and documentation.
  • Comply with safety and infection control policies of the laboratory.
  • Participate in continuing education.
  • Technical and troubleshooting when required.
  • Attend relevant meetings.
  • When required assist in booking appointments for tests, ordering consumables, and general office duties.
  • Patient billing using EFTPOS and Medicare claim processing.
  • Ensure the recording of expenditure and the appropriate receipts are submitted to managers for reimbursement.
  • Ensure accurate recording of kilometers on the company car or personal car used on company business.
  • Work with other staff members to promote respect and a positive workplace.

Role Requirements:

  • The successful applicant must hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in biomedical science, health science, exercise/sport science, human movements, or of a similar nature. Post-graduate studies in Clinical Measurements science is highly desirable for this role.
  • Experience in this field is highly desirable, with an immediate start for the right candidate. It is expected that you have experience in the majority of the Standard Tests outlined (practical placements or work experience). Experience in the advanced testing procedures is desirable but training can be provided for these.
