The post-holder will be required to contribute to the leadership, organisation, and delivery of teaching in the broad area of Paediatric Dentistry. In addition to the delivery of clinical teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relating to dentistry, we would also expect the candidate to contribute to leadership and organisation of school-wide education activity.The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong programme of research to complement existing research activities in the School, Faculty of Medical Sciences and University. The candidate will build on existing research in one or more of our three school research strands of Applied Oral Health Research, Translational Oral Bioscience and Dental Education Research. The candidate should look to develop expertise more widely in oral health and/or education research including to establish, where possible, new collaborations locally, nationally and internationally.The appointee will be appointed at an Honorary Consultant level and will be expected to contribute to clinical services in the discipline of Paediatric Dentistry within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which hosts the Newcastle Dental Hospital.The University has developed an document which summarises the range of activities that academic colleagues may be expected to perform.Informal enquires may be made to Prof Chris Vernazza, Head of School of Dental Sciences by e-mailingKey Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the delivery of academic and clinical teaching in Paediatric Dentistry and other relevant subjects as required by the Head of School
  • Contribute to the leadership, design, development and review of aspects of academic and clinical teaching as required including admissions, student support, student progress monitoring and assessment
  • Engage with internal and external educational quality assurance activities as required to ensure a high quality teaching offer
  • Enhance research activity in their field, which will complement and enhance existing programmes of research within the School
  • Develop interdisciplinary links with relevant research teams within the School and/or other Research Institutes in the Faculty and the wider University
  • Work to build regional, national and international research networks
  • Attract research funding to support areas of research activity
  • Produce high quality research outputs
  • Develop a team of researchers, including postgraduate research students, with similar interests
  • Undertake engagement activity to increase the impact of the school’s work with wider stakeholders, networks and communities
  • Contribute to the delivery and leadership of clinical services in the discipline of Paediatric Dentistry at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and contribute to regional development of services. An annual review of duties will take place with both the Clinical Director and Head of School as part of the job planning process. The job plan initially will include the following programme activities
  • Direct patient care x 4 (to include clinical supervision of students and NHS team members, new patient and review activity and treatment activity including with sedation and general anaesthetic)
  • Supporting clinical activities x 1
  • Academic x 5
  • Total 10 PA

  • An established broad knowledge and clinical experience in Paediatric Dentistry and related subjects applicable to the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum
  • Experience of learning and teaching in subjects related to the activities of the School
  • Ability to develop and deliver high quality learning and teaching aligning to the School and University’s stated aims
  • Ability to develop and provide leadership to teaching and research teams
  • Ability to attract funding to support and enhance research
  • Ability to publish internationally leading research
  • Experience of effective supervision and support of postgraduate research students

Qu Qualifications
  • BDS or equivalent
  • PhD
  • Successfully completed Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Completion of FTTA post-CCST training or pending (within 6 months of interview date) in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Fellowship of HEA or equivalent and/or Academic teaching qualification
  • Full registration, or eligibility for full registration, with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) including entry to specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Eligible for honorary status with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
