Council Overview

Strathfield Council (Council) is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually. Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

About the Role

Strathfield Council has a fantastic opportunity for a Community Development Coordinator to join our Library & Community Services Team on a permanent, full-time basis. 

The Community Development Coordinator facilitates programs, services, and information in accordance with community need with priority given to the key target groups, in accordance with the Community Strategic Plan.

The Community Development Coordinator is responsible for the following:

  • Overseeing a Community Development Assistant (0.60 FTE)
    • Work in consultation with the target groups and agencies in the community and to support capacity building to meet needs.
    • Be a ‘hub’ for community inquiry in regard to services that support aged and disability, multicultural, children, youth and women and provide service referral as required.
    • Represent Council at relevant inter-agencies and forums.
    • Support program delivery to key targeted groups and be effective in marketing programs and services and disseminating information to the wider community.
    • Liaise with other Council’s departments in respect of the needs of key target groups.
    • Provide events, presentations, and regular activities such as Children and Youth Drop in, Seniors Week, Youth Week, Children’s School Holiday programs and Community Grants annual presentation.
    • Write reports to Council as required and be competent in using InfoCouncil and the administration of council committee.
    • Manage community and small grants program.
    • Develop surveys and coordinate community engagement activities to assist Council planning activities.
    • Research and develop plans and business cases to support Council addressing needs of community and in accordance with Operational Plan.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Tertiary degree qualification in Social Sciences, Health Sciences or relevant qualification and experience in community services.
  • Demonstrated ability to address social needs and set up programs and/or deliver in collaboration with key community groups and agencies. 
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills (oral and written) and able to communicate effectively and engage with relevant multicultural organisations and community service networks. 
  • Understanding of the needs of children, youth, multicultural, women, seniors and people with a disability. 
  • Demonstrated time and events management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines. 
  • Well-developed computer literacy skills, specifically in Microsoft Excel, other Microsoft Office software and records management. 
  • Hold a current Class C Driver’s Licence. 
  • Hold a current Working With Children Check, First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain.
  • Previous experience in working in Local Government or the Community Services sector (Desirable) 
  • Experience in coordinating community advisory committees, or in a Community Development role (Desirable)
  • Experience in research and developing plans and business cases and presenting findings to key stakeholders (Desirable)
  • Demonstrated ability or experience in managing staff to deliver key outcomes (Desirable)
