Job description

Original Power is a community-focused, Aboriginal led organisation that builds the collective power of our people and backs our leadership, skills and capacity to genuinely achieve self-determination in our community and on country.

Original Power provides strategic advice and campaign support, facilitates capacity building and connects communities. The demands of climate justice require us to not only confront the climate crisis, but in doing so, build our capacity to ensure we are people who can confront all forms of injustice, determine our own futures and help bring greater control and dignity to our communities.

We are seeking an experienced Community Organiser to join the team, and support our work in Defence of Country, partnering with communities in the Northern Territory to support their efforts to self-determine what happens in their communities and on country.

This includes extensive travel to key communities to proactively support the Traditional Owners and members of the Nurrdalinji Aboriginal Corporation ensuring crucial campaign information is communicated, developing relationships with community members, working with external partners to roll out the campaign strategy and assisting fundraising and lobbying efforts.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Apply your experience as a campaigner, Community Organiser or project manager to build the power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through collective action
  • Strengthen connections between our people using organising and campaigning as a way of making change, and sharing the tools and resources needed
  • Put into practice your commitment to self-determination and passion to be part of a future powered by community-driven solutions.

YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES

This is an Indigenous Identified Position.

Essential

  • At least two years' experience in a community organising, project management or community development role
  • High level of cultural knowledge with experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations
  • Great communication skills for working in collaboration with Traditional Owners with the ability to explain and support a wide range of activities
  • Sound skills in computers including working within Microsoft GSuite and Microsoft Office
  • Solid administration skills including being able to organise people and their travel needs to get to meetings, keep good money records, work via emails and follow policies & procedures.

Desirable

  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in a relevant field
  • Existing relationships with the Traditional Owners from Daly Waters, Larrimah, Marlinja, Elliott, Mataranka, Minyerri, Katherine and Borroloola
  • Knowledge of the areas represented by the Nurrdalinji Native Title Aboriginal Corporation.
